Lightweight flywheel question

When I bought my miata the guy told me he had installed a lightweight flywheel and a clutch. He gave me receipts for the install but not for the actual flywheel. So how can I tell if it's a lightweight one or not? Without dropping the tranny and looking. Thx

You could take the starter out and look or look through the slave cylinder hole and see if you can spot any aluminum.

That's a good idea I never thought of that. Thx

Or you could just rev it in neutral and see if it behaves like a lightweight flywheel does. Do you know anyone else locally with a Miata you can compare it to? The effects are not particularly subtle.

Depends on the flywheel. I have the heavier FM option and I can hardly tell a difference. I'm sure I could back-to-back, but it isn't immediately apparent. Hosspoons has a lightened stocker and I can't tell any difference between his an mine.

my fidanza 8lb is 100% noticable.

I shaved 2.5 lbs off the factory flywheel and I could tell the difference in neutral, and during rev-matching.

My ACT clutch and Prolite flywheel make a hell of a lot of noise on decel..

deveto89 08-20-2011 12:52 AM

Well it is loud when I decel. But I've never been in a stock miata so I wouldn't know what stock feels like

IHI 08-20-2011 01:43 PM

Wait.... Does a lightened flywheel make noise while decererating? My diff is wining like crazy, only on deceleration. I have a 11,7 F1. I thought the diff was to blaim...

Mine was shaved 5 pounds (150.00 for labor) and I did notice the difference on stop and go traffic, the same during acceleration. No noise at all...

The machine shop took out the outer back lip completely, balanced, sandblasted and resurfaced, better than new.

Look in the slave cylinder and/or started like other members have said.

You could probably pull the clutch fork boot off and see well enough to get an idea.

On the way grab a telescopic magnet, if it does not stick to the flywheel for sure is aluminum, or at least say it will not be chromo (steel) fw.

shlammed 08-20-2011 09:48 PM

aluminum flywheels have a steel friction surface.

spoolin2bars 08-21-2011 04:58 PM

dont stick it on the friction surface!
