Lines with spiffy AN fittings. Dressing? Or Sauce?

OK so I want AN fitted lines everywhere in my engine, because they are shiny and awesome and shit. Other than a few places where running braided SS or nylon is better than rubber (fuel, oil, ???) is it really necessary? Don't clamps work just as well? I know that some of the fittings are neato and lock on, have quick detach etc, but for most wrenchy enthusiasts aren't clamps and rubber hoses good enough? Do I really need AN hoses for my stupid catch can? How about my vacuum hoses? ?????? Coolant lines??? I think that in most places it is just car engine bay masturbatory spiffage. Concur/disagree?

I'd think they be good for you. since you constantly have issues, they are a lot easier to unscrew in most case when you need to pull the motor.

Faeflora 09-29-2010 10:45 AM

But if I unscrew that means I have to screw it back on and that means all sorts of possible woe. Stripped threads, shavings in my juice, broken power plant frames..

Full_Tilt_Boogie 09-29-2010 11:17 AM

Youre probably the only person who could strip AN threads, lol

Masturbatory spiffage. I did almost all AN on my motor build last year, and it was expensive and time consuming to spec all the right crap. When I went back to the stock n/a 1.6, I bought 4' of rubber hose and some hose clamps, and was done in minutes. The AN stuff might be a little easier on disassembly, but you better make sure you're careful tightening everything back up (same as clamps, I guess), and use the right wrenches b/c the spiffiness will wear off quickly when you scuff your shit up.

miata2fast 09-29-2010 11:27 AM

Put AN fittings on the parts that you find yourself servicing more often, or in areas that are most visable. It will make a statement even if all hoses do not have them. It can get real expensive real quick when you go to the high dollar hoses and fittings.

I personally like the understated look of the nylon hoses. I will eventually switch over to them when I have the doe. They are lighter, and less abrasive to your hands and parts.

Actually, it is possible. I know. When I was tightening my AN oil drain fitting into the oil pan, my tapped thread pitch too small. I cracked my oil pan AND stripped and fucked the AN threads. They are aluminum so it can happen. so nyah

Faeflora 09-29-2010 12:30 PM

And... if you get grit in the threads, like sand, dirt whatever, the threads will get fucked up and you will need another fitting. Ask how I know that one.

Braineack 09-29-2010 12:31 PM

how have you survived so long in life? obama prop you up?

Faeflora 09-29-2010 01:03 PM

No I propped obama up with my mighty cocksickle. Don't be jealous that I get twice as much wrenching experience as anyone else since I make sure I have to do the job over.

Aricjm15 09-29-2010 03:39 PM

Have you ever assembled an AN line before?

+1... they are a pain.

but, that being said im doing a bunch of it with my engine build this year too. they are alot better to deal with in reducing leaks.

Dont use summit ends, they leak like a seive.

My summit -4 seems to be holding up ok for my turbo. Everything else I have is russel though. Works much better then the Mr.Gasket stuff i started with.

What's so hard about assembling AN fittings? Just put the locking nut on the hose, insert the fitting and tighten the assembly in a vice.

Asx 09-29-2010 07:02 PM

Maybe there is grit in the seal or the seal is pitted gouged or whatever. You can get soft metal conical seals that match the an fitting. Slip over the male end and retighten. Neat stuff

TURNS101 09-30-2010 06:57 PM

I have all AN fittings now. They look bad ass and are easy to work with..

SolarYellow510 10-06-2010 01:49 AM

I am going for the OE look as much as possible. My goal is that when I'm done, any interested parties will have to know what a stock Miata looks like to know mine isn't one. I have a big collection of spring-type hose clamps pulled off Mazdas, Hondas and Toyotas at the Pick-Your-Part. Cheap, quick, reliable, stealth.

hustler 10-06-2010 08:09 AM

I'm replacing a couple slip-on hoses with SS due to leaks, wear, or the line tearing at the fitting. I have no problems assembling them because I'm a man.
