Looking to Upgrade Fuel System

Hey Guys, I'm new to the forum and fairly new to the Miata scene.

I've got a 2000 and I just picked up a 01 VVT engine that I am going to build and drop in.
So I figured I would start cleaning up a few things and get some others ready for when I get the motor back.

I have a question on the fuel system and I was just curious if my "idea" would work.
I'm going to delete all the evap stuff and the dampener on the fender.

My idea is to run all new lines, new pump, new injectors, replace the rail with something like the radium unit, add an inline filter and add adjustable fuel pressure regulator.

I'm thinking that I would plumb the feed line into the front of the rail rather than the rear, then come out of the rear of the rail to the afpr mounted to the fire wall, then return it to the tank.

Does this make sense and would it work? Or what other ways should I be looking at?

Thanks for any input!
-Amos

So, convert to return-style like eleventy billion other NB owners?
lol

Can I get one of your cookies now?

Famous Amos 10-17-2017 11:42 AM

Yes Sir.

I just haven't seen any definitive ways in my searches so I was basically looking for some assurance that I had the right idea.

I would get you some but I have found that chips ahoy are better so I'd go that route. lol

I'd start reading build threads if I were you. Not only will you get good ideas (or learn from other's bad ideas), but you'll find pictures, part numbers, and all sorts of wonderful things to help you build your car.

A single basic search will not really help you. Days/weeks/months of browsing, searching, reading, and learning will. And then you'll have a really good understanding of what you want to do to your car, and why.

Also, you'll want to keep at least 1 pulse damper in your fuel system, there's 2 there for a reason, you don't want to just delete them.

I had read threw a couple build threads ha I suppose I was just getting overwhelmed with all of the reading I was doing.
I guess I’ll just keep reading.

Would using an aftermarket damper be an option?

Thanks again for the input.

That's an option. Also some fpr's come with a damper built in.

What are you end goals for the car? That's the biggest factor in what you should be doing. The best, most expensive fuel system in the world is no better than stock if you aren't using it's potential

Of course there's going to be some debate on these numbers, and certainly some wiggle-room, but this is at least a rough guideline for NBs:

<170whp just leave the fuel system all stock
170-220whp add bigger/better injectors
220-300whp add bigger fuel pump
300whp-400whp? covert to return style (I used a return line off an NA on my car)
+400whp bigger lines, aftermarket rail

18psi 10-17-2017 12:30 PM

sounds about right. though even at 400 you probably don't need bigger lines

Famous Amos 10-17-2017 12:50 PM

The end game I'm looking probably somewhere in the 300-350 range.

I figured that the lines would be fine, but there is just something about some nice shiny braided hoses that gets me going for some reason.

Thanks again, I appreciate your responses.

I'm going through the days/weeks/months of browsing right now. What did you end up installing on your car?

concealer404 12-29-2017 10:45 AM

I'd like "Nothing" for $400, Bob.

Famous Amos 12-29-2017 11:23 AM

I have not installed anything on my car yet. However, I believe I am going to run all new lines, use a radium fuel rail, regulator and dampener.
I'm not sure of the exact set up yet, but I can post pictures once installed.

Probably wont be until spring though, as my engine guy is pretty backed up and he hasn't even started on my new motor yet.
