The supercharger puts a fair amount of stress on the crank pulley that the turbo guys don't need to worry about. Sorry for your loss :(

I guess so. Post in another thread from peanut gallery says crank looks ok, so I may get out of this one relatively cheaply.

Did you use a new bolt? If the keyway survived, loctite red and 131 ft/lbs on the new bolt may do the trick! :giggle:

I did not use a new bolt. When I heard the news I had that moment of uncertainty and doubt. "Did I fuck this up?"
I have been over this in my mind. FSM calls for 130 ft/lbs, and I am positive I torqued that sucker to 130ft/lbs. I was standing in the engine bay with the FM crank tool attached to it, standing on it, and cranking on the torque wrench. Your proposition that the supercharger puts more load on it makes sense to me. Loctite ftw. Next time I'll go to 150 ft/lbs as well. |
Over torquing a bolt does nothing. Is 130 the top of the tolerance or is 150? Don't go to 150 "just cause" you'll stretch the bolt and it'll end up looser than Martin's mom. I mean 130ft/lbs.

When you do the Loktite, spray the bolt and the threads in the crankshaft end with brake cleaner first. These parts are often oily, which will interfere with the performance of the Loktite.

Glad you got it figured out. When I originally suggested the keyway, it was because I just had the same problem. Key didnt break, but it wore a groove and gnarled the key enough to retard my timing quite a few degrees.
This is a good video for the loctite fix, although he uses JB weld: Also, I've got a spare timing cog from a '96 if you need one. Keyway looks pretty good. You may want to use a brand new one, though, since the loctite fix is sort of permanent unless you want to blast your key with map gas to get it off. |
I think at this point, Mobius was just going to reassemble with Blue or Red rather than doing the full "Loktite" (i.e., liquid metal) crank nose repair.

Fortunately the crank itself looks ok. New timing gear/pulley boss/woodruff key going in. The key was snapped in half. There will be some loctite on the crank bolt.
I'm having AR Auto go ahead and put it back together. Getting it towed home, up the driveway, into the garage, then doing it myself seemed a lot more work than exercising my "Hey, go ahead and fix it" muscle. |

I'm making myself a giant crank holder tool like King Mike has. My FM one isn't long enough. I'm also getting or making a 30" breaker ratchet. |
Something that big I'm not sure I'd want a breaker ratchet. If that thing snaps you're almost 100% sure to visit your wife at work with broken fingers. I'd want a direction connection, that's my 2 cents. You could actually be buying a really nice snap-on 30" ratchet, I dunno.

Well since you and me both stared at the timing marks not lining up properly when the engine was at TDC, and didn't clue in, I would say at least a warning, maybe a one-day ban is in order. Overt awesomeness must not go unpunished.

Was this pre or post-beer? If pre-beer (sober), then you have an excuse. If post-beer, I think a temporary self-ban is in order. And just think, mellow made the suggestion sober. Impressive. |
We did not immediately start drinking. Obviously we should have.
Man at this point I can't remember for sure if Josh and I indexed the engine together, or if it was just me by myself earlier, and we just ran the timing light together. |
You checked it alone, I read timing marks with the timing light. They looked to be decent, reading 16*. It should have read 10*, but we were jumping 10 and GND from 1.6 directions, because your stupid "non" peasant mobile didn't have a diagram on the diagnostic box.

That's awesome.
Picked up the car today, all's well. Got it back up on jackstands to get the undertray back on, all the bracing, etc. Thanks for all the help guys. |
