LS1 Coil Packs
I am in the process of converting to LS1 coils from my Toyota COPS.
From the research I`ve done, the LS1 coils fire on 5v just like the COPS. So simple question. If I wire up the LS1 coils exactly the same as the COPS, all I `should` have to do is set my dwell to 5.5-6.0 or so. Or will some changes need to be made on my board. It seems like there were some posts about changing out the pull up to something with a lower resistance. Also, has a recommended cranking dwell been figured out for these coils yet. |

I found this on Megamanual...
Attachment 191776 I imagine if I follow this wiring, all should be good. |

So it looks like the one difference between the LS1 and the Toyota coils is the extra ground on the LS1 coil and the tach signal on the COP.
Attachment 191770 How would the wiring change when going to the LS1. Would the sense ground go to an ECU ground pin, and the regular ground just to the head or something. What would happen to the blackwhite and yellowblue wires that go to the tach signal on the COPS |
anyone?

Why are you switching?
|
Ideally you want to use the tacho out from the ecu, there are other ways though... What ecu are you using?

I kinda doubt ms1 has support for tacho output... Time to upgrade to ms3 w/ ms3x and run full sequential :) The 96+ cars generate the tach signal from the ecu instead of from the coils, you might read about what those ppl do.
|
To make the tach work with the MS1 you need to jump two wires in the diagnostic box with a 1k 1/4watt resistor. Perhaps that wire would be a place to get the tach from?
Here's the thing though. Do they actually need the tach output operational? The Toyota COPS don't use a tach wire at all. |
Those tach outputs from the coils usually drive the dash tach.
|
So if they don't have them, I'm screwed. Great. Maybe I'll stick with the COPS after all.

Wait, What? I've been lurking here because I have a set of LS1 coils that I'll be putting on my car. It shouldn't be too hard to get a tach output using MS1. At least according to this thread. https://www.miataturbo.net/showthrea...s1+tach+output
|
the 96-97 MSPNP drive the tach from the ECU, and there is no funny firmware tricks going on, so I don't see why a standard MS1 could not drive a tach...
|
I'm sure it's easy. But I can't do it cause I don't touch that kind of stuff. I'll just keep my COPS for easyness.

MS1 does have a tacho output, bit of an extreme reason to upgrade to MSIII. To get your MS1 to create a tach signal just build this simple ass circuit, should take all of ohhhh 10 minutes. http://www.msextra.com/doc/ms1extra/...l.htm#tachoout Has worked perfectly on my car for 4 years so far. |
