ls1 COILS on stock vvt engine
 

Alright guys i go to get into my miata yesterday and when i start it. The thing throws an engine code and does not run correctly.

Well long story short i have thrown a few related engine codes.
I need to find the numbers but here is the run down.
1. misfire on cylinder 3
2. stuck VVT cam Stuck retarded
3. the iac is messing up.


The codes say something along the lines of vacuum leak or plugged exhaust.

I am going to check all the vacuum lines and clean the upper intake manifold and try to look into the stuck vvt acuator. I plan to swap plugs out.

But when it comes to the Cops they are the factory ones for my car 2001 1.8 vvt engine. The car is running a cold air intake and other than that is stock. But i have a set of 16 ls1 coils in my garage from changing them out on my dads truck and they ended up not being the problem.

I have also read on here a few times that turbo guys use them for more spark.So could i use these if my coils were to be bad. Will they run on the factory ecu without throwing a cel. AND what would i need besides wiring.
And ignitors or resistors or anything of that nature.

My car is not turboed just stock right now just checking my options at this point i want this car to run. Any comments / help is appriciated.

If your car is stock and not running right, throwing GM coils at it is only going to complicate your life.

Why don't you try throwing spark plugs at it instead?

I plan to get it running right before I decide to do this, I was just thinking. Just an idea.

A: Solving your other problems first would be a good idea. :D

B: What little information I've found says that the LS1 coils are 5v triggered, so all you need is to figure out whether your NB's ECU is going to dwell them properly.

There is some irony in that fact that Corvette guys seem to love ripping these coils off and replacing them with some MSD thing.

What the fuck is going on here?

I do not understand the purpose of this scenario other than to generate pain.

The Irony is the MSD ones don’t live as long as OEM especially if the dwell is not right.

I guess I should of left out my random cel codes. But as I said fixing them won't be bad.
But buying new coils for my nb will be expensive. And I have a few of these that are good in the garage and stumbled upon them.

So I figured I would ask. They should provide good spark. And I could mount them on the firewall or something. The way Joey is showing them wired it shouldn't be too hard to make up a harness. If the stock nb ecu will accept them.

Thank you for the info. I need to do a little more research on how they fire as in reguards the the two coil packs for 4 cylinders.

Does anyone replace the oem cops with anything else I know alot of guys build cops for the non oem equiped cars. But does anyone replace the vvt ones?

I have the stock VVT coils and so far, they have been good to 22psi.

They work fine (the VVT coils) up to 25psi on the the blue turbo Miata.
