OP if you really want to give this a shot, i have a 2004 MSM MAF i'd let go for $50 shipped. It's a Mazdaspeed part, so it's GOT to be worth at least 15 horsies.

MAF vs Speed/Density -- in principle, MAF should be better. Instead of baking the VE of the motor into a 3d table so that you can extrapolate from MAP & RPM into a fuel amount, you just directly measure the air going in. As for why it's not more prevalent in the aftermarket, most of the downsides to Speed/Density come from a comparative lack of flexibility in dealing with changes to the motor's VE. With a factory computer that sucks because if you put a better-flowing exhaust on the engine, then suddenly the fueling is all wrong and you can't fix it. With an aftermarket computer it's still wrong, except you have a wideband so the computer can cope and then you just fix it. So S/D is cheaper and easier and doesn't have a major downside, so why use MAF?

People who tune cars with reprogrammable factory computers and factory MAF sensors often stick with the MAF sensor.

Agreed, but mainly because its much easier to just define the oem ecu parameters and work with them rather than re-write the code altogether to eliminate maf and use s/d. Most that go for big power still end up deleting the maf altogether because there are still some fairly hefty limiations once you start approaching big flow

Yeah, once you start getting to the 3.5" maf housing range you start loosing the resolution at lower RPMs. Nothing wrong with sticking with a 3" maf and transitioning to speed density when in boost. A lot of GM cars use the blended system.

That's.... not really correct at all. They're using the flapper boxes you speak of, which are not present at all in any KL car.

They're using RX7 units, and the K-code Hybrid is probably something to do with F2-powered 1st gen MX6/Probe.

The KL unit is more of a "sliding booby nipple" type deal. I personally think it's far worse than a flapper, which is probably why those guys pick up so much power with a Millenia MAF conversion.

Ah, that is right, F2 powered cars are the right ones. Thanks for correcting that. I'll go back an edit it just in-case some one reads that and is forever searching for a kl powered car with the vaf.

No, let them do that. I'd like to see that happen. :bowrofl:

I was laughing because OP was taking our advice, and within a day spreading it over there...

Erat I expected the 'weapon r intake install' thread. Still a good one.

Laugh it up, Ill start a stupid post section and come up with all the jokes just to amuse you. Hey do those electric super chargers work ... will magnets on my fuel line really improve my mileage ... that tornado thing for my intake is so cool ... octane boosters are as good as race fuel ... will carrot juice really help my hair grow again ... I think that's enough for now ...

RACELAND EXTREME COILOVERS. And drag wheels. lulululul

For the record. It takes a stand alone ECU like a Microsquirt then you add a Ford Lightning, Infiniti Q45 or GM LT1/LS1/LS2 MAF to what ever motor your building as these are the best MAFs out there. You cannot add if you do not change the ecu. This comes directly from MircrSquirt.

My original post has merit. I just didn't have all the info, hence asking the question.

FRT_Fun 07-25-2013 09:08 AM

Cool story bro. Or just get a MAP sensor.
