Mizu radiator

Hello everyone,

I am planning on turboing my 95 miata soon! :) But i am want to upgrade the cooling system first!

So has anyone had any experience with the Mizu Radiator? The price is nice but i could not find any reviews on it. So if anyone has had any experience with it or knows anyone with it please share.

Thanks!!

PS my power goals are around 250WHP on a T3 turbo maybe T3T4 turbo.

I have one on my 99. Here are my observations:

The radiator looks great when you take it out of the box. Exterior welds are neat. It dropped right in and fit the chassis 100%. Now for the not so good...
The welds on the inside are marginal to poor. Poor penetration in several areas. Ugly, flow restricting globs in other areas. The included rad cap is junk. Your OEM miata cap will fit, but the cap neck build is a bit off, so it will be difficult to twist on and off, but it will work. Mine also had a bent outlet, which I straightened up with a plier. It is provisioned to fit the stock fans, but the main fan stands off a half inch, so it won't actually draw any air through the core. I can watch my water temp gauge drop at highway speeds, and climb when I stop. I have not seen temp go over 210F, but it's something to watch for. Weatherstripping around the fan would help here, or just go with an aftermarket fan.

I went with the Mizu because I have friends running IT and SM with it. If it works for them, then it's likely to work with me. However, the previous performance radiators I purchased were from Griffin and Ron Davis. The Mizu is nowhere close in comparison. Possibly an unfair comparison, but most of the reviews I've heard on the Chinese radiators show that they're nearly as nice as the name brand stuff. I personally don't think that's the case.

I expect that the Mizu will be 'ok' for my needs, and at just over $200 it's pretty cheap. But after hearing all the glowing reviews of Chinese rads, I was a bit disappointed, mainly with the quality of the welds.

Take "drift" out of your screen name
Don't brag about using a CG lock or it being a "mod"
Stop being a cheapass abd buying shitty chinese parts.

It's the same radiator as Godspeed or Mushomogo....same chinese crap.
If you want to be cheap, yet still do it right, get a OE MSM rad. or a OE dual-core all metal radiator...or one from an automatic Miata.

Ya I haven't updated my signature n a long time. Lol I have not gone the cheap path. My cars looks different now that I got my stance coilovers and sparco seats and steering wheel, Jackson sways, Headers, Intake 002 sport maxxs, hard dog ace roll bar, and much more on the way. But I am not saying that my car is the coolest fucking miata ever! I am just saying that I got my car to the point where I am happy with it and now I feel like my car is ready for a big ass turbo! That and I got money to do so.

That is why I was asking people on the fourm if they have heard anything about this rad. Cuz I couldn't find any feed back on it. But after doing some more hw I was leaning towards a 55mm rad from koyo.

And lastly I will never take the word 'drift' out out of my seen name. If you don't like it then just don't look at it.

But thanks for the feed back ill look into those rads as well.

thanks for the useful feedback. I'll take this info into consideration when it comes down to my final choice.

Going with a KOYO is a good route. Had them in my 96 and 99 and never had an issue.
The 55mm is not always the best way to go, you may be fine with the 37mm core as well. I'm using a 37mm PWR currently and have had no issues in my area (I did have some cooling issues out West at high altitudes while driving with an extra passenger and a trunk FULL of stuff and the a/c on..and I wasn't surprised).

My shitty Chinese Mishimoto works just great. Even with only one slim fan hooked up poorly with no shrouding I don't even come close to overheating and I'm in TX. I do have the M-Tuned coolant reroute though... and no A/C.

LOL at not buying cheap Chinese shit when half the members on this board have Chinese turbos.

You....FRT.....STFU...this conversation has nothing to do with you....and I'm being an extra asshole to people today and I don't want to be an asshole to you.

<3

But seriously, there are other options out there that are also inexpensive...though they might not look all blingy-shiny, they still work.

You know it.

As for you mr driftfantasticrainbow....maybe one day you'll catch the irony in me being an ass about having "drift" in your screen name ;)

I assumed they were all the same, but after actually looking into it quickly discovered that there are actually a few different designs. Some of the obvious differences are number of rows.

I'd wager a cheap Chinese rad would outperfrom a MSM or auto radiator easily as the Chinese radiators hold substantially more water.

But i cant understand how by having a 55mm radiator will cause overheating. If it is full of coolant and the water pump is pumping why would it do that?

O ya i took your advice and started being an asshole to people, so i kick a kid down the stairs today and it felt good!!!!!!

Doppelgänger 05-31-2010 01:20 AM

Thicker core isn't aways better. As air moves across the front of the radiator it pickes up heat, duh, but using a thicker a core, the air will be hotter by the time it reaches the back of the core thus not pulling as much heat away from the core. Also, pushing air through a thick core is harder than a slimmer core. It also comes down to material. A stock copper/brass radiator can dissipate more heat than an aluminum one can...which is why you see a lot of thicker aluminum cores..but aluminum is stronger and less expensive.

Kid kicking needs to be a selective process. Only do it to ones who will clearly grow up a retard anyway..like ones belonging to white trash or ghetto people. You don't want to kick the kid that could grow up and invent the next cool thing you can't live without. Also, it's best to hit them with a phone book because it won't leave any difinitive marks for the authorities to look at.

kotomile 05-31-2010 09:17 AM

When my Godspeed popped I went to a thinner 37mm Koyo and am very happy with it. Besides the weight savings, I've come to the realization (with some help from Qckslvr..) that a thicker core generally can't cool as well because the coolant will tend to form a boundary layer at the edges of the massive passages and let hot coolant slip by without getting the chance to shed heat.

Laur3ns 05-31-2010 10:56 AM

I'd say a thicker core will have diminishing effect but will never cool less (all other variables equal, like core material).

what everybody else said ^^^^^ plus with a 55mm radiator your losing space in you engine bay. i dont know when the last time it was you looked at your engine bay, there is not to much room in there to begin with. with you say you want to go turbo your gonna want some extra room between you engine and fans. trust me ;)

marinerblue92 06-01-2010 09:59 AM

No problems with my Mishimoto!

miata_drift 06-02-2010 11:58 PM

After doing some more hw. I am going to go with the 37 mm koyo rad. Then Iam going with a really good flying miata clutch then it will be boosting a t3 turbo all damn day! Thanks ill let u know how my boot build goes. just one more pay check and then the transformation from slow to Honda killa begins. Lol
