Interesting, I've never seen those wires with orange stripes on them. Usually they're just black. For what it's worth, your ground points could use some cleaning.

There are two ring-terminal grounds that attach back there, each terminal having two wires:





You've got a meter, which is a great tool. Measure for continuity between the various wires and ground. Also, remove the wire that you accidentally crushed between the valve cover and the head and/or between the engine and transmission.



White wires go to the ignition switch and the alternator.



There's also a jumper to the 40A BTN fuse, the 30A Cooling Fan fuse, the 20A AC fan fuse, the 60A ABS fuse, the 10A Airbag fuse, and probably one or two others that I've forgotten.

Do check to make sure you havent pinched a wire or any part of the harness in the bellhousing, this seems like a simple "cant miss" type of thing but I was putting my transmission back in yesterday and caught the side of the harness in the bellhousing and immediately got smoke pour out of the engine bay (underneath the intake manifold area) from a power wire being grounded out. Luckily I got it out before anything caught on fire.

So what happened? What wire are you talking about? In order for us to help you you need not be so vauge. We need to know if you F*#&ed up and or what happened.

It's like going to the doctors and saying I need help. When he askes whats wrong telling him that your stomach hurts without giving him you ate 2lbs of candy. You need to give any and all info.

That one tick is more likely from one of the solenoids or relays in the car. Possibly the fuel pump, I honestly can't remember if the stock ECU primes it at key-on.

The starter should not tick simply from the key being moved to "Run." Or did you mean that the starter ticks when you turn the key to "Start"?


Everything you need to troubleshoot the starter is on the image I posted above. It's a no-brainer of a circuit. You turn the key to "Start" and voltage shows up on the black/blue wire. You depress the clutch to the floor, closing that switch, and voltage then shows up on the black/red wire, which is the one that shows up at the starter on an insulated 1/4" flat terminal.

So that's one test. When you turn the key and depress the clutch, do you get +12 on that black/red wire at the starter?

That, of course, isn't the main starter power. That wire just causes the starter solenoid to operate. The solenoid, in addition to pushing the pinion gear out into position, also functions as a relay. When you apply voltage on the blk/red wire and the plunger with the gear pushes out, it also closes a contact which allows current from the big black wire to flow through to the starter motor, and that's what actually powers it.

So that's test #2: is there +12 at the big black wire on the starter, the one with a ring terminal on it?


Stupid question time: When you re-installed the motor, did you remember to hook up the ground strap? There are two of 'em, actually. One on the exhaust side of the engine, and another on the Powerplant Frame, under the car, back towards the diff.


And of course, do tell us what you did to fix the short circuit problem!
