MSM boost pressure from manifold?
I have a stock MSM and a MSM with a blown motor but lots of extras that someone else built. So today I decided to rob the FM intake from the "parts" car (until I put a new motor in it). Come to find out, due to the FM log exhaust manifold, different turbo, IC, etc., they hacked up the intake to work with that set up. Fine, I can deal. So I put it together, and get it on, only to find out that I don't have a spot on the compressor outlet pipe to for the boost line to the stock boost controller. the stock spot has been removed and can't be put back on due to the other FM piping, and the FM pipe you would normally use was not on this car, but replaced with some other "custom" aluminum piece with no nipple. My guess is the other turbo has a spot on the compressor they went directly to, or since it's a EBC not an MBC on that car they didn't need it (I don't know about that though)... ANYWAY. Any ideas where I can get boost pressure from? Currently I have it hooked up to the IM, and it's pretty garbage which I expected. It will get me around, but boost is erratic and comes on SUPER late. Will it do damage being hooked up to the IM and not the compressor outlet?
Any other compressor outlet spot, or an idea for making one that doesn't include welding a nipple to the inline pipe I have there? Here's a pic if it helps. Thanks!https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...dfe269a009.jpg |
well... if you have no nipple to use, one needs to be welded anywhere between the compressor outlet and the throttle body.
Preferably some where after the intercooler. |
you could, I dunno, read the stickys? https://www.miataturbo.net/diy-turbo...eed-ebc-47532/
TL;DR: yes, it'll do a little damage as the turbo will spool "too much" when the throttle plates closed, IIRC. |
This in a hole drilled into your rubber elbow in charge piping. Since EBC, I would go before FMIC, but either is OK. Main thing is between Compressor Outlet and Throttle Body.
Or one of correct size / dimensions for your need. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...da828df0de.png |
I highly recommend getting boost pressure from another turbo. Perhaps a Garrett? EFR?

you have other problems if your boost is erratic and late. if anything, with it sourced from IM it should be way sooner. also I drove my 1st miata with it sourced from there for over a year and no issues at all

stock ebc and stock ecu/tune? that's definitely no bueno. the oe msm ebc is trash in that it only activates up top and is basically open loop. basically useless. try mbc

I hope you also know that the msm ecu holds back timing and keeps car super lean til like 4500 or so. so it's going to have a terrible powerband even with mbc

No-name BOVs leak often and can be erratic. No BOV really needed below around 12psi anyway because the pressure differential isn't that great.
