My LS2 coil installation
3 Attachment(s)
I finished mounting my LS2 coils today. Used some .075 thick aluminum to make a bracket. Welded some uprights on and voila.
It's very sturdy. I may add one more brace that attaches to the head grounding bolt to triangulate the mounting points and give it a bit more rigidity. Attachment 189273 Attachment 189274 Attachment 189275 |
Nice. Will you have a heatshield for your header? |
It is getting ceramic coated.
|
Please explain that strange looking thing on the side of your engine, does not look like a turbo.
LS1 Setup looks nice. One of these days I might switch over. |
They are not LS1. LS1 have a lighter spark and are a bit different for mounting. These are LS2/LS6/LS9 coils (all the same). around 90mj of spark, LS1 have 40mj and the LS2 truck coils (they are round and have a heat sink) are approx 110mj.
I just picked up my parts that I got from Summit. 6' bulk MSD wire, 4 LS1 ends and 4 plug ends. Now I just need to put them together. And that my friend is a C30-94 Rotrex :P. Hopefully hitting they dyno next week. Hello 300whp 1.6L. |

Made my wires today. I ordered 6' of MSD 8.5mm wire, LS1 boot ends and spark plug ends and assembled them myself. Total cost approx $50.
Attachment 189200 Car fired up instantly with a 5ms dwell and seems to idle a lot smoother than with the COPS. |
I know you said you were going to triangulate it, but as it sits, it's not kinda... err... floppy? with just the 2 bolts holding it?
|
A little. I had it running today and it flops a bit. The idea here was to get the coils mounted to get the car running so I can swing by my friends house who has the welder. I needed to have the car there to make the brace part since it was too hard to measure correctly when I made the other part.
|
dig it. It looks REALLY nice and I may use it as inspiration. I was hoping you'd say FUCK NAW NO FLOPS HERE DOGG. Oh well, easy fix.
|
I think if I would have used some thicker alum. for the base and extended the front "upright" all the way to the left edge by the bolts it would have been fine.
|
I have a metal brake and I think I'm just going to make 2 90* bends and make it out of 1 piece...
How thick is that? I can bend something ridiculous like 1/4" thick. |
it's only like .075. If you can bend it that will make life a lot easier.
|
what did the plug boot ends look like? do you have a part number for them? i would like to build my own wires.
|
This thread is only 80% awesome without links to the plug wire parts.
|
Bulk Wire, 6' is more than enough and I had 2.5' left over...
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-34033/ Spark Plug Ends... http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-3301/ LS2 Coil Ends (3 options, 45* is the cheapest)... Straight - http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-3302/ 45* - http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-3303/ 90* - http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-3304/ You also need one of these..., they make the best crimps http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TAY-43395/ And a vice to make the wires. And make sure you read up on how to do it. You don't just clamp down, you have to partially strip the wire and bend it over. Or get the cheapo one but who knows how good it is.. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WMR-W86500/ |
Why not buy Miata wires and just mate the LS1/2 coil adapters to the end of them? That's what I urged the people who bought my coils to do. For like 15 dollars more I was throwing a set of wires in the box with them.
|
Because the MSD wires for the Miata do not work on the 1.6L and every other option is only 7.5-8mm. These are 8.5, and the total cost was about $25 less than a kit + new boots.
And because I don't want $15 wires. This engine is going to be making some big power and I need wires that are up to the task of delivering the LS2 spark. |
Cool man. Your car is coming along great!

Looks nice Falcon. Did something similar this week for a customer. Waiting on the wires from Magnecor. These are the LS truck coils. Would of liked to have put the coils at the front of the head to shorten the length of the wires, but the catch can is in the way.
