So how do these compare to the toyota COPs that I just got done installing?

These are MUCH more powerful.
The LS2 coils supposedly have an incredible discharge rate with higher current. On the megasquirt site they say the LS1/6 coils have a 40mA discharge which is supposedly really good and the LS2/7 and LS2-truck coil have a discharge at 120mA! What I don’t get is the LS3 type coils from external appearance look like they use the same technology as the LS1 coils to make the magic spark occur in their configuration not like the LS2. I doubt they are really the same internally. Bob |

Can you provide a link to this?

Thats what i've gathered lately but I'd like to know why. I still like the idea of not having plug wires to mess with.

It makes your engine bay look WAY more manly. Trust me, all the bishes at the drag strip this evening were all over my coils... :bowrofl: Asking me why my engine looked so tough.

I've tried to find hard numbers on the difference or a direct measurement comparison and came up empty. Anybody have the info?

I took this LS2 Yukon ignition project to DDMWorks, a great speed shop that's local to me. They fabbed a stout bracket to mount the coils in nearly the stock location (they're actually in an "L" arrangement) and fabbed up a coil harness that plugged into factory -- no splices! It's stealth enough that you might not notice it's a custom ignition if you aren't familiar with Miatas. Runs great, very happy with the quality of work, and can't wait to get the turbo installed! :D
Main thing I wanted to share is another installation alternative: https://www.miataturbo.net/picture.p...pictureid=1964 https://www.miataturbo.net/picture.p...pictureid=1963 |
thanks, but like saying I have big Willy, but keep him hidden
I like the Fly'n A's "manly" set-up [and miss my C30-74 without the Gordian knot of exhaust tubes]

Guys the round coils with the heatsink are apparently the best but I have some of the square type and they work fine with 30psi.

Same wiring as COPS. Set dwell to 5MS.
Since this wires up the same as cops, on a 94: Would B be connected to tach (black/white)? Is C connected to trigger(brown/yellow and brown)? D would connect to 12v (blue) and A would connect to ground (black). Thanks |

Thanks These pictures for pinouts: https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1333515571 5.5-6.0 ms dwell for LS1 coils https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1333515571 5.0-5.5 ms dwell for LS2 coils My bauce LS2 truck coils. Used a TV VESA mounting arm as a bracket. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1333515571 I heard the LS2 truck coils with the heat sinks only came on flex fuel vehicles. They were even called flex fuel coils. Not sure how true this is though. |
Yeah thanks for the post I was just going to put that photo up. I wired mine into direct fire, but if you're running batch or wasted spark it's more or less the same. Truck coils did come on some gas only vehicles like the original Tahoe IIRC.
Regardless, LS1, LS2, LS7 etc. they are all great coils and unless you're running 30PSI you'll be fine with any of them. |
Oh, and my "signal ground" (brown wire) I just attachec all four an grounded it to the head of the block, the same place I have an extra ECU ground. No issues.

Sorry, you misunderstood. I'm not. I'm basically saying a lot of people put so much extra onus on the truck coils when they are only going to be running moderate boost (like under 20PSI). The truck coils are a lot hotter and you would really only see their benefits if you were running extreme boost (like 30+).

Im a little confused on the ecu ground. For the ms2 ground i just tapped it into a black wire on the harness. Coukd that be the reason im getting the 5-6k rmp misfire under boost?
Im using a ms2 not a ms3 should there be 4 wires i shoukd run from the ms2 to the engine bay? Sorry for all the questions. I'm new to ms. |
