NB8C - BP4W Missing Torque (timing or ECU config)

1 Attachment(s)
Over more than year ago I did a timing belt and cams seaks replacement and did the mistake to also upgrade the ECU for a ME442 and had paid for a remote tune...

Been running the car and felt like I have been missing some Torque around 3-5 thousands RPM.I was at the circuit drifting with others NB and driving others cars and getting others running my car we all felt that indeed seems I'm missing quite some torque across 3-5rpm. Checked the VICS operation, the solenoid and everything seems there to be working properly.

So far I'm in between if I miss a tooth on the timing or didn't align properly the lobes or indeed something is wrong with the tune,

I've remove the head cover and checked plugs and timing and while all the maintenance was for me a first time doing it I wasn't able to find any concerns. The engine has over 204000km which is 126000miles and a compression check shows a couple of cylinders lower than the other two from 170 to 145 however yesterday I drove another with similar compression issues and the car felt indeed pulling stronger than mine.

Not sure if anyone could suggest me ways to troubleshoot this, I've attached the tune and some pics.

Thanks in advance for the help !

That tool holding the cam wheels looks to be back-to-front, if that matters. How do those marks hold up against the marks on the head?

thanks, the tool is similar as https://flyinmiata.com/products/flyi...2nd-generation, sorry not sure what you mean back to front there?

Will take a picture without the tool tomorrow but felt the marks with the cover where looking good to there.

That tool's ok on closer examination, my concern (not having used those devices previously) was how the marks that sit behind that tool line up. See if you can confirm crank is TDC too, no point in getting the cams correct wrt each other if they are not correctly timed wrt the crank.

Someone else can look at your log, not in my skillset, but have you spoken to your tuner about this issue? Only other thing I can suggest is checking your tensioner is functioning, but that is unlikely to affect performance in a specific part of the rev range.

You say that is an NB8C, what year? Or is that a 1600? Or is that your 99JDM 1.8, which we would call NB8A?

So the car is from 1999, it's a NB1 with the 1800l engine... I'm lucky and also have another one from 1997 (NA8C)...

So I just took a picture of the timing marks and I believe I can feel ashamed of myself for driving like this for over a year...

Do I have to understand that I'm 6 degrees in advance on the crank ? I guess this should explain my loss in power?

You are right

Yes, the cams are retarded by about 6 degrees. That will definitely reduce the power.

Yes, as comments above. Fix that and let us know how it goes.
