New DW400 fuel pump poor fitment

2 Attachment(s)
Dw part #9-401-1041 new big boy bosch pump 94-05 miata kit

Anyone using this pump? The sock they send with it isnt even close to same size or angle as the oem (and dw300 for that matter)

And there is no rubber isolator for the bottom ao the pump has nothing to sit on

Dw300 vs dw400

Yes the fitment is bad, just like the Walbro450
Most threads I've researched reused the OEM bushing, threw the isolator sleeve over the pump and clamped to the pump cover assy,

I did this when I put mine in:

I just dont get how they can make their dw300 kit fit like oem but the dw400 is a disaster. I cant even put a oem sock on it because the sock hole is female and oem sock is also female

Savington 11-26-2018 07:30 PM

Seriously? The DW300 is the same physical size as a stock pump with the same inlet/outlet diameters. The DW400 is substantially larger and requires that you put on your big boy pants to figure out the install.

This thread is like buying 15x11s and whining about the "poor fitment".

LownSlow616 11-26-2018 07:33 PM

Its taller. Thats it. I can cut the inlet pipe on hanger no biggie.

Its bigger around but doesnt contact any part of the hanger when placed in the center of the bottom hanger bracket.

And what do you suggest I do about the sock?

Savington 11-26-2018 07:37 PM

I suggest that you put your big boy pants on. Using a DW400 implies that you're building a 500whp Miata. It's not Legos. If you can't figure out the fuel sock, you may have bitten off more than you can chew.

LownSlow616 11-26-2018 07:45 PM

Guess ill just use their sock and fuel starve and die. end thread thanks guys

18psi 11-26-2018 09:20 PM

I did it. And survived. Their 300 "kit" fits cause it requires zero brain power, cause it's same size as oe.
The big boy has a bigger mouth because like all big boys, it really needs to suck hard ;)

Are you building a 500+ on cornjuice miata? cause that's what would require such a pump

Der_Idiot 12-01-2018 09:20 PM

Interesting, I was thinking about the 400 so it's good to know the complications.

Im making a new bracket. Its going to fit great when im done. Talked to customer service and they said the sock will be fine

They're wrong, the sock will stick up and cause fuel starvation problems at anything less than a 3rd of a tank. You might try turning it 90 deg so it's sideways in the tank, that might get you to a 1/4 tank.

You're not getting plug blowout with the stock coils? I couldn't make past like 8psi on my NB1 without moving to COPs.

0.0020" gap

I doubt that turbo will do 500+ but I’m hoping to be proven wrong

...LOL at stock coils

May I ask how everything went following the custom bracket? Did the different sock shape affect the fuel pumps ability to take up fuel past a certain level?

Not sure. Car won't be on the road for a couple more months. But i ended up putting the sock on sideways. This is how everything ended up before it got dropped in the tank

Probably fine in a straight line. That will fuel starve at any sort of lateral load though.

Nice work. Picked up a DW400 recently and will be returning it for the Walbro 450 pump mainly due to the fuel sock starvation issue and general fitment. Talked with a DW Technical contact about the issue and they didn't really acknowledge the fitment issues, only saying the rubber isolator isn't needed as the pump "isn't noisy" and the Miata tanks have their own "fuel slosh issues". No mention of Savantington's big boy pants. My issue is that this really shouldn't be advertised as being for a Miata at all, in the way that the DW200 and DW300 had literally "drop in" fitment.
