Noisy Hydrolic Lash Adjusters. Help! (HLA's)
 

So I finally tracked down my problem with my new motor. Was timing, as my cam gear was not on correctly on the exhaust cam. Swapped around, and wala! My question is, My head has Brand New HLA's. Ive run the motor for 30 mins now, getting ready for an oil change, and they have been real noisy. I remember that sometimes they take a while to quiet, but I forgot how long. Anyone have any ideas or good advice? Im hoping they just need to wear in.

um if they are new then they should pump up in a min or two if they dont pump up make sure you are getting oil flow to the head man. And from there if the oil is old you might just try changing it.

Engines brand new. Just changed oil, and also just took it for a drive. They quieted down a bit, but the valvetrain is still kinda clattery. Im not touching anything as so far as aditives or synthetics untill the rings are seated.

ok well then confirm that the head is getting oil did you saok the hlas before the motor was assembled? this helps out alot.

I had the Machine shop put the head together. Guys a brilliant Genius when it comes to engine building, so I trusted him to do the work. Thankfully, these HLA's just took a long ass time to oil up and quiet down, but the engine purrs like a kitten now. Its smooth and runs well. Im used to having HLA's quiet down or silence with oil after about 15 to 20 mins, and ive heard 30 mins before. But these suckers took probably a total of an hour and a half to quiet down.

This is a built motor with a Mazdaspeed Oil pump, which pushes 30% more oil over stock, so I know its lubricating well.

the main issue comes when people put the hg on incorrectly resulting in trouble. And yeah if your motor guy had soaked the hlas prior to install they would have pumped up faster. Still glad to hear it is all sorted hope you enjoy the car. Oh and FWIW MS oilpump is nothing special, but a oil pump with the aftermarket billet gears is.

Don't be too upset if the HLA noises still exist. I got new ones when I did my rebuild thinking it would calm down the clatter some, and while it did help, it still does tick a little every now and then when the oil gets really hot, or when the oil is ready for a change. Glad you got it figured out though. Seems like mine also took a longer time than I expected to quit down.

Mine took a good 30-45 minutes to quite up again after I swapped my shortblock and they had been sitting dry for a few hours.
