This, I understand:

(However we are heading into Hurricane Season, so I don't think there is much to worry about. You should be gainfully employed in short order...)

But to this:

If I blow this one up, I probably won't build another.

You didn't build one of those $100K show cars that doesn't even have oil in the motor that I hate to see at car shows, did you? Get out there and do what you spent the last year and a half and a bunch of cash building and use it as intended. It's like you are looking for reasons to not take it to the track.

It's actually starting to sound like one of my fellow students when I was getting my pilot's license. We both started at the same time. He spent all of the money for ground school and dual instruction. I soloed after 12 hours and bought my first plane. A year later he had 40-odd hours and was still with the instructor. Every time the instructor tried to send him up to solo, he begged for another hour of dual instruction. I don't think he ever soloed. Pity.

If you're so concerned... a pricey fix: Flyin' Miata 1 800 FLY MX5s

Holy crap. $600 for a damper?

TravisR Apr 7, 2009 10:55 PM

Jeeze they are serious about those dampeners. Nice billet oil pump gears carved from 4340 chromoly steel are ready to whip your oil like fine mayonnaise. :giggle: Buy, Boost, Be happy.

who's blowing these up at 300whp again? I know of someone who popped one on stock power.

Hustler -

You can loose an oil pump on a 75hp Karman Ghia just as easily as on a 1000hp Hennesy Viper.

Good preventative maintenance and strong discipline in monitoring your gauges. If it looks like something has gone wrong, back-off and shut down.

If you want (need) the security blanket, tear the engine down and install the stouter gears. Otherwise, quit looking for validation, turn the key and press the throttle...

Yes, it could get costly if things went wrong, but you knew that before you spent dollar one on the build. 'Tis a fact of life, deal with it.

This is the moment where we bring up the picture of the Japanese guys and write "Maybe you're not as gay as this, but DAMMIT you're trying!"
