Oz Supercharged Nb - Air Filter Options?
 

Hey guys,

I've been through quite a few different ideas in my head but it's finally come that I have to do something about my air filter set up.

I live in Brisbane where the air temps are often 30 degrees which can't be good for intake temps obviously especially as quite a bit of my driving is in traffic.

I was thinking of maybe a Prelude cone filter that alot of people in the states seem to use but I'm unsure how to link everything up - the car doesn't have an AFM so perhaps a 90 degree bend from the black supercharger inlet and some form of pipe towards the headlight?

Or how about a flexi-pipe all the way from the black supercharger pipe to behind the headlight?

What options are people using for enclosed air boxes etc?

Why not drill a hole in the cowl area that the wiper motors sit and stick it in there.

What's the white bottle in the cowl?

A K&N Cone filter will lay behind the headlight, you could route it up there pretty easily, looks like you have lots of space.

However looks like you have an A/W intercooler - do you know for sure you have an IAT problem?

Completely stock I saw IAT in the 175 F range in stop and go summer traffic. I would think ducting, so that your radiator fans were pulling air through the intercooler's radiator as well, would be a better way to go.

Do the aussie cars have OBD-II, so that a scangauge or any of the other OBD readers can give you IAT?

I think it already has one (a hole) behind that blue mod plate. ;)

That's a Nopro washer bottle.

That car is a 98 which unfortunately doesn't have an OBD-II port. It does however have an Adaptronic E420C so the IAT could be analysed via the serial port.

I second the motion of moving the filter to behind the headlight and making a isolator box. Since there is a hole under the headlight, you can even run some ducting from the front opening to the holt under the headlight to help with getting even more fresh air to that area. I'd also be inclined to modify the JR intercooler kit by putting it on it's own closed liquid system.. i.e. adding another reservior and heat exchanger. When temps go up and the coolant overflow isutilized by the cooling system, that only makes the coolant for the a/w ic that much warmer.

I have had 2 JRSC setups with a/a fmic setups with little problem. Sure there is a bit of idle droop, but it's worth the much lower IATs. It also helps to run a smaller diameter piping (2" or so) so the intake volume is that much less. The M45 doesn't flow enough to really benefit from the typical 2.5" piping.
