Piston to wall clearance supertech pistons
Hey folks. I did quite a bit of searching on this and found some varying info.
Per an earlier post by Savington supertech reccomends a .0028” ptw. I have gathered that this seems a bit “tight” for a performance build. Savington goes on to say that he uses a .040” for some of his track cars, and even higher on others. Other forum members have used smaller than reccomended .0028” and that was universally frowned upon. Finally a few guys have run between .0030 and .0040” i am building an engine for street and occasional track events. It will be NA initially and then will receive a rotrex c94. Goal is a modest 300hp. Is it safe to say .0035” is a nice happy medium for my intended purposes with the supertech alloy? I would like to keep oil consumption minimal and get some good miles out of this build. Oil squirters will be plugged. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you. |
I am at almost .0038 and the engine sounded great when cold/hot. Unfortunately I have other issues atm.

Anyone else? I could use the guidance.

I'm pretty sure I just ran whatever the included documentation suggested

Yep, any machine shop with lots of experience building turbo engines, will want the spec sheet. Then they might make a minor change that they like.

FWIW - I'm running with a .0030" clearance on a .5mm overbore and have been happy. Engine was built in 2014 and I have no complaints.

Alright guys. Thanks. The spec is .0028. But that does not take into account a forced induction build. Sure you can boost on the spec but generally I’ve seen over the years that more power and boost tends to use a little bit loser. I was just trying to determine if there was an accepted middle ground for these pistons and moderate. boost. Thanks for the replies.

I went 0.003" with Supertechs.
