Default Pistons

Will these be ok ASC Rods Wiseco Pistons Mazda Miata 1 8 Turbo K553M84 Ascmiatarod | eBay I've given a brief run down of my plans.

Iv'e just joined and though i should explain what i'm up to really.

I'm rebuilding the engine from a 1.8 1994 MX5 (i have a full car albeit it being someones old track day car with no V5 and Its going in my hill climb racer which is a space frame silhouette classic mini, front engine RWD.

Its going to be turbo'd as i already have a brand new GT2560r unit. I have no history of the car really so want to build a strong forged bottom engine.

The block is going to be over bored to suit. Cam belt and water pump oil pump changed, again so i know the history.

Cylinder head ive no idea what i'm doing with yet as i'm getting to grips with this MX5 stuff and seeing what it response to best.

I like the look of those Wiseco pistons over the Supertechs... much smoother transitions around the valve notches.

Looks like quality kit, maybe even more than is absolutely required for a 2560R. However, you will be able to run allofit and not be concerned about the bottom end. I would recommend billet oil pump gears (or a fully built pump), as that is the next weak link after rods/pistons.

I good head rebuild with 3-angle valve job should be the starting point for the top end. Add some Supertech springs to allow increased RPM limit. If you have $3600 or so that you want to spend on the head, order up one of 949 Racing's "CNC" heads.

Good luck with the build.

I've just placed my order with Fab9 for all the bottom end rebuild stuff. Very happy with the service so far.

I am a bit disappointed with 949 Racing as i asked for a quote inc shipping to the UK and all i got back was a set of instructions to follow on how to get this info from there web site.

Engine needs a rebuild anyway even if its just for my own piece of mind. The engine is coming out tomorrow.

Is the oil pump a user rebuild able/uprate able item?

You can definitely rebuild the pump, but use billet gears like Mike said. What are your power goals for this car? Your goals will determine how much you need to upgrade.

Also, forget about porting that head. With all of the money you spend on a port job, you could just buy a 99-00 head and flow better stock.

My aim is to have a reliable 250bhp at a sensible 12psi of boost. I want to be able to develop the engine as i get used to it. My car is only going to weigh about 550kgs so bhp per ton is going to be mental.

This is a cool project. I think your weight aspirations are a little optimistic, but still a cool project.

If your going for 250+ BHP i would consider buy some upgraded trans internals

Here is what 263tq at wheels did quickly

I think 1200lbs with a Miata is impossible unless you start trimming away sections of the body. Even the EXOCET is >1500lbs

Weld a seat to the PPF brace and go ham, that's the only way you'll get even close to 550kg

We had our car down to 1600lbs (725kg) with a 1.6 turbo. I don't think there is 500lbs difference between a miata body and mini body. But I've been wrong before.

At that power level, you should be alright with a six speed. Upgrading trans internals is very expensive.

So is a 6 speed. The 6 speed is stronger, yes, but the gear ratios suck. It's also expensive, and you can buy 2 to 4, 5 speeds for the cost of a single 6 speed.

Also it's torque + car weight that breaks trannys, the car all be it lighter, yes but is going to be a hill climb racer as he stated.

So he might come out cheaper, better, safer, and quicker with the built 5 speed.

actually thats very close to the truth and loads of posts on miata.net agree with me simply hit the google button.

btw FM used to have some very nice upgrades for the 5sp cant find them on their website any longer however.

With 250whp in a very light chassis either transmission will last just fine. You kids try to keep it civil in here, will you?
