Planned 1.6 build target 280bhp
Hi all
Starting with a 1.6.LNC bottom end and proposed Boundary Oil pump, ATI damper and Wiesco pistons from Fm, Belfab rods and lightened 1.8 flywheel and a later 1.6 head with solid lifters and 1mm oversize valves. Adaptronic ECU. 1. Using the ATI damper reqiures a ribbed waterpump and alternator pulley. can I switch the pulley from the current alternator over or do I need a later one. If so from what year and is the voltage regulation build in or is it controled via the Adaptronic. 2. Anyone experience of Belfab Rods. Thanks in advance Andy |
The oem is ribbed. Timing is controlled by adaptronic.
Yes they will be fine for you 280bhp One thing is with you 1.6 head your really lacking flow even with all the bells and whistles. A wise investment is for a 99-00 head. Bolt right up with minor modification. That will give you more bang for your buck. What turbo are you getting? |
We still have the M-Tuned MiataTurbo Rod sale going on! $299 and we have the much better ARP 2000 bolts!

The cams in the later model JDM head are really wimpy. Otherwise, it's the same thing but with solid lifters.

merely the old NA style 1.6L w/solid lifters???

What mods can be made to a 99 head to fit it to a 1.6? I've never heard of this. Sounds improbable.
|
Buy aftermarket de-stroked crank (plus rods & pistons) to yield 1.6L in 1.8L block! :bowrofl:
|
Do you already have 1.6 turbo hardware? If not get a 1.8L............

I know 280whp will destroy your rear end. You are also aproaching the limits of your 5speed as well

To be fair he did say 280bhp, not whp, but yes the 1.6 rear will be shattered at that point.

Shoot, one of the autoxrs in my local Miata club has blown 2 1.6L rear ends launching with his close to stock normally aspirated 1.6!

Yeah they've been known to blow at stock power, but then again some people have been running turbo'd on them for long period of time with no explosions.. Not something I'd be willing to risk

A 1.8 head will not fit onto a 1.6 block, ever, full stop. The bore spacing is wrong, the bolt spacing is wrong, the coolant and oil ports don't align, etc. You might as well try to install a head from a Chevy SB350 onto the engine. To install a Euro-spec 1.6 NB head, you just need to figure out what to do about the CAS. Mechanically, it's a direct fit. |
I bought all of my engine internals from belfab racing, got a great deal and i loved the parts, no problems at all yet.
|
OP, if you can afford Carrillos, get them. If not, the Belfabs are great bang for the buck. Obviously, there is a huge price difference.

Thanks for you comments
Just to clear up a few points. I've already got the full 1.6 FM turbo kit and ECU with a Torson LSD. I shattered the standard just using the car never mind standing starts (256bhp 216ft/lbs)! I'm in the UK so it will be a later european 99-00 1.6 head with soild lifters. Intend using a crank angle sensor. So I take it any of the ribbed alternators from later NA's will be ok. Anyway will have to get back to doing some proper work!!!!!!!! Thanks all and look forward to your comments. Andy |
