Playing with the Hydra, tuning advice
 

So I did a WOT set of pulls yesterday to get a good feel for the Miata while I go about my work, and I got the following on my log during the 2k-redline pull in third:

6k RPM
11.1 psi (my boost gauge says 15...)
11.5:1 AFR
75% duty cycle (more like 60-65 after correction by the hydra)
21º timing
196°f coolant
83°f intake air

Seeing as I thought I was pushing moar boosts then I am I'm fairly surprised. Any suggestions on improvement? I'm unfamiliar with what I should be seeing as far as tuning, which is why I really haven't dabbled too much and stick to dyno shops. What kind of timing do you guys see and what AFR should I be shooting for without wasting gas? Is 21° good for that level of boost and AFR? I know to watch my knock sensor, but I don't know what I should be aiming for beyond that. Flamesuit is on.

I'll grab it when I get home, weather's turning shitty for the next few days, with up to 7 inches of snow on Saturday. That will push me out for exhaust until next week..

Here's the map, it's a bit off as it has sequential spark enabled and a few other things but essentially it's what I am currently running. I just got it back from Jeremy a few days ago, I had him tweak a few settings (bump up redline and boosts).

Something to consider, I get a hesitation @ high RPM on track if my fuel is lowish. Were you particularly low on fuel or anything?

That looks like Jeremy's base hydra timing map. Yes you probably have quite a bit left on the table.

^ That's not very surprising since I paid a guy at a local shop for three dyno times (2h segments each) to tune this thing and I suspected he didn't even touch the timing map from what I can tell..

I bumped boost to 14psi and got 10.9:1 and slightly less timing, then bumped again to 19, but I am either blowing out spark or pulling fuel due to ping, but my knock ramp never hit above .2.. I'll grab my log when I get home.

If your knock sensor isn't showing knock then most likely, there is no knock. Also, the hydra will not pull fuel if there is knock. It will pull timing.

BTW you may want to lower your maximum boost target to 19psi. If you do so, the hydra will hard cut fuel at 22psi if your wastegate signal falls off.

The upper limit is set to 21psi, the wastegate is adjustable so I just cranked it up some. It's weird that my boost gauge is flipping the hell out, but the hydra is like "it's awwwwwite, you're at 19.6 psi mofugga". Hmmm...

The hydra reads absolute pressure and your gauge reads relative pressure.

Well I checked my timing tonight out of paranoia and the ECU showed 13° and the engine was running at 10°, fixed that little mishap. Not entirely sure how the timing got off like that tbh..

I was going to go for a drive and see how the change worked out but it started pouring. There's always tomorrow though :)

Be careful, that means you will be running 3 degrees more advanced now, and I believe I read earlier that you were at 21 degrees at 180 kpa. That seemed like a bit much to me. You were actually running 18 degrees.

I just looked back and it said 11 psi. 176 kpa. Others wiser than me can chime in.

That much timing should be just fine. It's the FM timing map.

On the earlier miatas you have to calibrate base timing with they hydra.
