Post your intercooler set ups

I am in a middle of figuring out a DIY intercooler set up. I got an interecooler for free. here is a picture of it Picasa Web Albums - Taras - Miata Project

I am planning on putting it right in front of the radiator. It looks like its going to fit perfectly with the hole where the AC canister is and i will make another one just like that on the other side and route the pipes from the top.
So i was wondering if people could post their set ups to see how they did it. I am mostly looking for the same set up i am looking into doing. I want to see how you route your pipes.

Thanks in advance.

Taras

Gee lighten up:jerkit:

18psi 03-06-2009 01:21 AM

gee, why dont you search and find the appropriate threads and quit being a typical Newb:bang:
I'm actually being nice to you.

You know why threads like this piss people off? When someone that is actually searching and not being a dumb newb and making new threads seaches for diy intercooler threads, they will have to dig through 100's of these kind of bullshit threads before they will find the good ones. If everyone does their part and searches, it will keep this place neat/organized and informative without having to spend hours weeding out the bad threads.

Rushin 03-06-2009 01:27 AM

I have been using a search button on here everyday for the past year. And found a lot of things. One problem with all the intercooler set ups is that pictures mostly look like this one
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...206_9_full.jpg
The plate over the intercooler is really not helping me to see how everything is mounted

And BTW, one thing i noticed after owning an 02 wrx for over a year that Subaru guys are very angry people for some reason.

18psi 03-06-2009 01:33 AM

I'm on my 3rd wrx and have owned 4 rsx's. I'm just an angry person, and right now especially because I'm tired. anyways, click on the link in my sig: my intercooler build as well as the build thread shows very detailed (imo) pictures of the process (of how I did mine).

Joe Perez has a detailed thread about how he did his.
Zx Tex has a detailed thread about his.
Patsmx5 has a detailed thread on his.

All completely different and all very well documented.

Rushin 03-06-2009 01:36 AM

i did look at yours. It looks nice, but its not what i am looking in doing with mine. The pic i posted is for sure what i want to do but the cover thing on the top cover how the intercooler is mounted.

18psi 03-06-2009 01:39 AM

check out zx tex's setup

Rushin 03-06-2009 01:51 AM

yeah i saw his set up. One problem is that he has an NB i have an NA so its a little different. I guess i should have made that clear in the OP.

patsmx5 03-06-2009 02:00 AM

Try putting your location in your profile and mods in your sig. Not hard.

I would actually be kind of interested in seeing some diy NA intercooler routing pictures. Im sure they are out there, just scattered. Ive been SO very tempted to do like a local guy and do a custom side by side setup with a Honda Civic radiator and a narrow (width) 4'' thick IC core with short pipes. Im sure it wouldnt turn out as nice as his since my welding skills arent up to par, but it would probably work nicely. Any reason more people dont do the side by side thing? He said he didnt notice any reduction in cooling, though I dont know if he tracks it or anything. Even though its a smaller rad, its not blocked at all by the IC. This way would make for very clean and short piping also.

Surely one of the prettiest things Ive seen in a Miata engine bay. Was or maybe still is a local welding shops, shop car. I guess maybe I could go ask him to duplicate it for me. I think I actually talked to him about it before in the past... forget.

I just wanted to thank you for this post. Nothing pisses me off more than going to search for something and all I find is people being jackasses to the OP and telling him to go search. Then I end up searching through 200 different threads full of people saying "go search".

Thank you for taking the time to point the OP in the right direction. A year from now, when some noob comes on here trying to be as polite and respectful as possible and he goes to search for a custom intercooler setup, at least he'll get some direction and advise instead of just a bunch of assholes saying "go search".

Rushin 03-06-2009 02:31 AM

Yes thank you for pointing in a right direction.

patsmx5 03-06-2009 08:29 AM

Go search is the right advice. How to search and what to search may be the problem. Look for people's build threads. Search for those. Find names and search for threads started by those people. If you find a person here with 1500+ post that's been a member a long time and has a signature with something that interest you (perhaps "...,DIY IC,..", then odds are they started a thread on here asking questions and posting pics of it.

I'd like to see the data on that one first...

here's mine: Index of /new_miata/intercooler

If I can't get my car to cool properly on the track, I'm taking it to BEGi and requesting a side-by-side.

m2cupcar 03-06-2009 09:42 AM

Under most circumstances the side by side yields the same amount of direct exposure that "sandwich" with a full rad behind does. IMO the best approach is to use a double pass rad so that you're getting that same unit of coolant into direct airflow once, and then again from post IC air.

Thanks for posting your set up. Did you see any improvement with a bigger intercooler?

Rushin 03-06-2009 12:08 PM

OK, i need some advice here now.

I got the above pictured intercooler for free so i thought i will get some use out of it. However now i realize that i will have to ditch the AC and its full with a mix of old stuff and new stuff so no one can suck it out for me. So now i am thinking i might just go with another smaller intercooler. Like this one right here

it looks like it will fit nicely in there. What do you guys think?

Braineack 03-06-2009 12:38 PM

you realize i still have a/c right?

m2cupcar 03-06-2009 12:44 PM

that's brainy's old IC - so you know it fits

which one? The small one?

m2cupcar 03-06-2009 12:58 PM

he's had that small one and the big version- all in his pic links above

Yeah, thats why i am asking him if he saw any AIT changes with the big one.

Braineack 03-06-2009 02:12 PM

I used to always see around 20-25*F delta in boost with the small one, now 7-10*F. Either case, it's still not bad at 12psi.

Rushin 03-06-2009 02:16 PM

wow, thats almost half the temps.

locomonkeyboricua 04-09-2009 02:25 PM

has anyone done a wrx style set up with the intercooler under the hood, with a hood scoop??? that way there is no block to the radiator?? i been thinking about it but not sure if a scoop would look good on a miata hood. ANY ideas??

Because as nice as Spestis' car is, a big radiator is still required for track cars. Big fans will let you get away with a blocked airflow radiator; nothing lets you get away with a tiny radiator and reduced cooling system volume.

I have thought about it, and proposed it when I was first planning my turbo kit but everyone advised against. Most popular reason, heatsoak due to engine heat.

Rushin 04-09-2009 03:47 PM

I made did mine a few weeks ago. Here how it looks.

Is that 2" or 2.5" piping. Lets see the relief cuts in the hood.

Rushin 04-09-2009 06:59 PM

its 2". I will take a pic of the cuts later. they are not too bad actually and were really easy to make with a dremmel.

That is the one I used, but the 4" thick version with the 3" inlets. It is definitely more of a pain to fit and get good airflow with the extra 1" thickness, but has more mass and less pressure drop (hard to say how much). I was seeing IATs similar to what Brain saw.

Since the pictures I lowered it slightly in the nose, and added an internal baffle. Both seemed to result in some IAT improvements, but it is hard to say for sure since I made other changes at the same time (fan shroud, more efficient turbo) and have had limited test time with the new setup.

I plan to eventually add some nose ducting to force more flow through the IC. I have also added WI for when I run the boost at higher levels.

If I did it all over again, I might consider this one. It was not available at the time when I did mine IIRC. It would be about as wide as what I have now by the time you add the 90 deg bends for the first one. This one would not need the bends since it has top exits.

If you are doing an over-the-top, I would try this one as I think it will work as well if not better than mine. Hell, in a couple of months, if I get bored, I might sell off all my stuff (IC, unneeded couplers) and try this one out. Of course with the WI, I may not need to.

damn, is twin turbo really worth it on a miata?

TurboTim 04-10-2009 10:19 AM

Hell no. I only got 291rwhp @ 14psi.

Standard Absurdflow is much better, higher hp and better spool.

Rushin, I really like your set-up. When I do my intercooler I think I will try to duplicate your setup. Esp. since I have AC & PS
