PSA: Fluidampr 521001 may have incorrect timing marks
We just received two Fluidampr #521001 BP Miata dampers to evaluate. We noticed the timing marks on the damper are retarded by about 25°. If you are just replacing a damper on a running/tuned car, you probably wouldn't even notice it. If you are setting base timing on a new engine or ECU, you would need to manually determine TDC and mark the damper yourself. Not likely to grenade any motors with timing retarded that much but they might not start either. Beyond that, the dimensions all appear to be spot on.

They just released the BP. Hopefully they rectify this before they start to ship to their vendors.

so then this is the reason why we'd stick with ati? ATI is 2-3* off rather than 25*.

I believe it was five or six degrees on the ATI. Much more sinister. Are you sure you are using the right bolt holes?

Damn that's too bad, never had an issue with fluidampr products, and preferred em over ATI stuff, I'll probably still buy one, thanks for the heads up Emilio

ATI's goof was un-fixable by the end user. Fluidampr's goof is easily fixable by the end user. Set TDC on the motor, scribe a new mark on the damper to indicate true TDC. If you have already set base timing with the OEM pulley, and you simply swap the Fluidampr part on, you wouldn't notice unless you needed to reset base timing for some reason.

Ah I see! so its not that bad.. fluidampr usually makes a damn good product for a product that's that expensive, shouldn't have any issues.. anyways I emailed fluidampr, and looks like they issued a recall to fix it
Thank you for your interest in Fluidampr products and services. Yes, we did just release the Miata Fluidampr for the B series engine application. However, upon shipping the first few units, we were notified that the timing mark location was incorrect vs. that of the OEM location. Unfortunately, when the units were sent out for fit and verification, the timing marks were not properly verified. Good news is that we issued an immediate recall and were able to track down and receive all of the units that had been shipped back within a few days. We are in the process now of correcting the timing mark locations and expect to be shipping again within 2-3 weeks. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with. The guys at fluidampr we're very forthcoming when I contacted them about the production error. They were able to quickly verify it and contacted me to let me know of the recall. Handled the way I would handle it. Solid

It’s nice when you hear such a response from a vendor. It seems more the exception than the rule these days. Look forward to learning more about this option. Currently an ATI user. First I heard of ATI timing mark problems. Guess I need to verify mine and see if TDC is really TDC. It sucks to think a custom tune was built on top of an inaccurate base timing. |
