Pull Motor from below?
 

I am getting ready to pull the engine. I have always done it from above.

I am curious if it would be easier to pull the subframe out from below with the motor and tranny on it. There are just a few bolts connecting the subframe to the frame. The steering shaft is not hard to disconnect. I am about to upgrade the brakes, so the lines need to be disconnected anyways

I must be missing something obvious, otherwise more people would be doing it this way. Please chime in.

You do most of the work with wiring and fuel for either method. Once it's ready to come out, it's the difference of working above the car or below it, which is easier?

And you can take it out with the tranny attached from above ya know. I even zip tied my drive shaft on to avoid draining the tranny oil.

If you have access to a lift, go with which ever floats your boat. If not, just pull it out the top.

It's ridiculous easy to pull it from the top with the transmission attached.

So much so that no one even bothers to attempt it from underneath

I have access to buy a '99 1.8 plus tranny mounted on its subframe. I'm considering swapping it into my wife's otherwise stock '93. My first thought was to just drop the whole subframe and replace. Am I going to have problems with re-using the '93 suspension?

The cool kids take out the bumper and pull it out the front.

Reminds me of a joke about a proctologist switching careers to be a mechanic.

You don't get to ignore anything but the motor mounts if you do it from the bottom, but you will have to deal with the steering gear and the brakes. Way more hassle than just pulling it out from the top.

If you can get your hands on a cherry picker its easier that way. Otherwise I don't object to pulling it from the bottom. We've had to pull a few from the bottom when yanking one from the junkyard. But getting a lift in there is just an impossible feat.

A proctologist had become fed up with malpractice insurance and HMO paperwork, and was burned out. Hoping to try another career where skillful hands would be beneficial, he decided to become a
mechanic. He went to the local technical college, signed up for evening classes, attended diligently, and learned all he could.

When the time of the practical exam approached, the proctologist prepared carefully for weeks, and completed the exam with tremendous skill. When
the results came back, he was surprised to find that he had obtained a score of 150%. Fearing an error, he called the Instructor, saying 'I don't want to appear ungrateful for such an outstanding result, but I wonder if there is an error in the grade.

The instructor said, 'During the exam, you took the engine apart perfectly, which was worth 50% of the total mark. You put the engine back together again perfectly, which is also worth 50% of the mark.'

After a pause, the instructor added, 'I gave you an extra 50% because you did it all through the muffler.'
