Re-Usable Oil Filter

Just came across this piece.
M-Tuned
I had never before considered the idea, let alone seen something like it. My builder suggested I start inspecting my oil filters by cutting them open and inspecting the filter element. Does anyone have opinions/experience with something like this?

Seems a tad bit pricy IMO, I could see purchasing it if it was closer to $50. What is the realistic life of the filter element?

Sounds like something hippie y8s would use. :)

I'd be a bit scared if my engine builder told me to start cutting my oil filters open!

How much of a pain is it to clean the filter?

Anyone ever notice that cutting your old filter open normally fills it with tons of metal shavings anyway?

I've seen other companies with reusable filters too. Can't remember what sort of pricing to know if M-tuned is competetive. They are supposed to last pretty much forever if you maintain them properly. That's the drawback. Just throw another $5 filter on and throw the old one away or have to pull the filter apart and clean the element. They are supposed to flow and filter very well though.

That!, Ill really like to know.

I would imagine as long as its cleaned regularly it will last damn near the life of the car. I bet the threads would go before the element.

LOL, I realize you were only kidding, but for informative purposes:

Quick google search showed reusable filters running $50 to $200. Several manufacturers. Most billet ones appear to run $150 to $200 so M-tuned is a good price.

A lathe with a cutoff tool also works well if you have access to one.

Only haz sawzall, dremel and ducktape in the toolbox

Edit: Almost forgot about the nude pics of hustler :jerkit:

fooger03 Feb 18, 2010 02:46 PM

zOMG! A sawzall and duct tape is all you need to be a SUPERHERO!!!

Dremel is more like a sidearm.

Hmm... Pretty reasonable price on the K-Tuned part, compared to what others are charging.

$135: MAZDA MIATA OIL FILTER - S1zzMIATA - MAZDA - AUTOMOTIVE OIL FILTER

$239: Filters - Pure Power! DURAMAX 6.6 Diesel Truck Lifetime Oil Filter - PurePower!, Inc.

$147: System 1 209-312361 System 1 Reusable Oil Filters

Tw34k Feb 18, 2010 02:48 PM

I want one for my honda but do they make one that fits b/d series

fmowry Feb 18, 2010 02:49 PM

Now if only I could find some reusable oil. :)

M-tuned is part of ETD racing. ETD is mostly Honda stuff. They likely have the filter at the ETD site.

No, you should thank the engine builder for giving you good advice! Cutting open oil filters (to inspect the filter element for pieces of ferrous & non-ferrous metal) as well as periodic oil analysis has be SOP for years in the heavy equipment and aviation fields. These techniques don't always prevent engine failure but they tend to warn you in advance of impeding problems.

Not a problem if you use the right tool; don't use a hacksaw! Filter opening kits range from about $20 to $50; do a google and you can find plans to make your own.

Joe, have you done this yet?? I've been tempted to try on my lathe (still using the old can opener style filter opener) but I had a few machinists tell me the cutoff blade would snag and breakoff. Can you give some suggestions on speeds? Are you doing this with the cut-off blade in the normal position slightly high of center or mounted behind the filter and slightly below center???
