Re-using Supertech pistons and re-ring
 

I'm about to purchase a set of used supertech 9.5:1 pistons which have done 4000kms. They appear to be in great nic without any scoring at all on the sidewalls or det damage, the only problem was in cylinder 4, the rings weren't sealing properly and letting lots of blowby into the crankcase, I figured they mustn't have been seated properly or honed..

Anyways, its cheap ($160), they're 84mm (+1mm oversize) and I figured I'd re-ring them with a overbore on the block and hone.

I did a bit of research into re-using pistons and as long as they don't have scoring or det damage they are fine, being only 4000kms is also a bonus.

So my question is, where do I find replacement rings? Should I use Supertech's rings or will any ring kit do?

I would imagine that you'd be fine using whatever rings you find as long as they're gapped properly. I don't see any problem with reusing the pistons at all.

I realize that you're in Australia so prices may be higher, but a new Supertech piston kit can be had here in the US for $300-350ish.

You do not have to use Supertech rings. There are plenty of ring manufacterers that can fill the grooves in your pistons.

Summit Racing can help you. I purchased rings for my car through them. You will need to know some specs (bore, groove width, etc.)

Cool cool, seems like the going price for a set of NPR rings are $85 ish landed to Australia, locally, I can get supertech rings from the local supertech distributor for 130.

I'm leaning more towards the supertech rings just for peace of mind, unless all rings are the same and it doesn't really matter?

If you're unsure, just get the supertech rings.

When I pulled apart my built motor this summer I reused my SupetTech pistons and bought new SuperTech rings from TSE. I would recommend going with the SuperTech rings just so you know you are on the safe side. When I get home I will see if I can get you a part number for the correct rings.
