Rebuildable/machineable head? (post catastrophic failure)
8 Attachment(s)
OK, so engine had a failure on #2 and I'm guessing that when piston #2 pulled a Houdini, various fragments made their way up the intake valves, like little metal salmon wanting to have hot sexy time, and were then ingested into the nearby cylinder. Those little sluts. Anyway. I've never had to send a head off for work and wanted to get you gays' opinions on the value of this head. Cams and such up top look fine. Like, what might be a fair asking price and what kinda costs would it take to make this a usable piece.

New valves, for sure. They look bent.
Other damage can be taken care of with careful grinder work. |
Oh ya, no question #2 valves look like spaghetti.
|
Most of that damage will come off with a surface, at least the flat part on either side of the valves. A little wire wheel action will take care of the rest.
To give you an idea on price, my head guy charged us $225 for a compression grind, valve grind, valve seal replacement, and a very good cleaning. I'm guessing this head would cost the same, maybe $50 more for a combustion bowl clean up, and of course the cost of new valves. Then the head is semi useless until you shim the valve lifters, and/or disclose that loudly in any f/s thread. You'll probably be able to shuffle the shims around until one cam is good, but the other cam is $50 for the next owner to finish. |
After new valves, cleaning/hottank, resurfacing and the combustion chamber clean up, I'd scrap it.
|
game over.
Is that your friends that popped when you borrowed it? Where's pics of the bottom end? |
Yeah I should of mentioned that in my post. It might be fixable, but if you're looking to recoup any money from purchasing the replacement block, this isn't the place to do it.
|
Nope, know better than to sell it here. Just trying to get an idea/ballpark of repairs to see if I could even get $100 for the thing. Would sell it elsewhere lol
|
That's a lot of squish zone damage. It's fixable, but I'd want material welded in and the chamber reshaped. For a head with $1k in porting already into it, yes. For a stock head, no.
