reputable miata engine builders

Hey guys I have a 04 msm. In my quest to run mid 12's on the stock turbo I blew a piston ring. Now I have no choice to build the motor. I really don't know where to start for a telital builder. I want someone who know miatas and takes their time. I'm located in nj, but willing to ship my block. I live the idea and service that FM provides but there pricing is just overkill in my opinion. Any information on shops would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Jay

the shop my car is at is great, but pretty ------- slow.
it's in northeast pa, right over the border on 80.
you could potentially talk to pablo at sansone mazda who has a side business working on mazdas - mostly mazdaspeed3's and mazdaspeed6's, but it might be worth a shot.

Philly, what's the name of the shop in ne pa. I am in northern Bergen county. Pa is only about an hour and a half away for me. More than worth it to check it out. The slower the better as long as they use torque plates.

give them a call - platinum auto in east stroudsburg.
talk to sean. he's building my engine. ask him whatever questions you want.

I got my machine work done by a local shop - NAPA Fairfax Auto Parts - One of Virginia's largest Auto Parts Dealer. - Auto Parts, Wholesale, and Machine Shop

Machinist was a fat guy who could pass for a rapist, shop is a shady building behind a 7-eleven, kind of messy. But it was cheap and good. Machinist has good knowledge of miatas. I got minimum of machine work (bore, hone, resurface block and head)

If I were you I'd just write a check to Trackspeed Engineering - Trackspeed Engineering

Savington 06-29-2012 02:02 PM

We've shipped built motors all over the place.

blaen99 06-29-2012 02:12 PM

If I were to have someone else build my motor, Trackspeed is the only place I'd trust it with. But YMMV.

P.S. Sav, do you guys sell built blocks only?

My engine will be going to BogusSVO. His informative threads have really impressed me enough to walk away from our current machine shop on my personal engine to shoot it down to him.

That said, my vote is for him or Trackspeed. Savington (Trackspeed) has also been very informative, but IIRC, his are farmed out.

The machine work is done by a machine shop but all measurements and assembly is done in-house by either me or Sav.

We can do a built short block. Email or call us about it if interested.

I think I'd rather look like a rapist than a machinist. lol

Good decisions. There are 2 reasons why I do not have a TSE motor in my car at this moment. The first is because he was not building motors in 2010 when I built mine. The second is because I am lazy and do not want to deal with shipping a motor back and forth from the east coast to the west coast and then back.

If you do the local bit again, call Jim Justice at Justice Racing Engines in Frederick, MD. Good guy, clean work at reasonable rates. He's helped a buddy of mine with a Northstar engine that made 30 horse/tq over factory from just assembly/balance/etc and helped setup my new 2.0 BP motor.

You can't put a price on experience. Sav has broken a few motors during R&D. All that was learned goes into the current builds. He would be my first choice for a motor build.

Ryan_G 07-06-2012 02:03 PM

I'll probably be building a motor soon and I will probably go with BogusSVO over sav simply because he is fairly close to me and I would be able to bring the engine to him and pick it back up without worrying about the shipping. I think either of those two would be great decisions.

TSE or Center Auto in Connecticut. They do some great spec miata motors but are also no stranger to making great power on all kinds of cars. They are an all or nothin shop when it comes to builds. They won't let you walk out the door with your motor unless they themselves are happy with it. My friend got his 530 awhp b5 s4 built there as well as his miata. My long block is getting dropped off next week.
