Sorry if I missed a post where this was answered.
I am about to swap in a 04 vvt engine. Got mega and will have vvt tuner from diyauto tune.

How much rear wheel hp till I need to worry about the rods.
I can tune spark so I assume I can eliminate detonation. I have 550cc injectors and a good fuel pump so I can supply fuel.
I have a 2560 journal bearing turbo so I can boost to 260-280 but I dont think the rods or trans would take it but that what I want you guys to tell me.

What is the high safe RWHP
and What i the high not safe but has worked for someone Max RWHP

220wtq is the absolute most I'd run on a stock engine on a Mustang dyno.

y8s has been at 250 for years.
i was at 250 with no problems.
many others call 250 on stock rods the "limit".

I'd say 250 is as good a guess as any.
Btw its torque, not power you should be worried about, and your tuning ability will determine whether it lasts or doesn't.
I've seen people blow up at 200

*edit; this is assuming street car. for track I'd listen to hustley and stay closer to 200

street car and autocross. If i am ever ready for a track day I will turn down the boost. Hell I would be learning and everyone says learn on low power to know how to go fast with power.

So what tq. what would be a high safe for that.

Is there a place in the rpm band were power (hp or Tq) is more dangerous

What kind of difference in seat of the pants difference will I see from a 1.6 I figure is putting out 200 rwhp.

No comments on what kind of difference I can expect seat of the pants wise trading from a 1. 6 at 200hp to a 1.8 vvt at 230 or so. I figured the additional displacement and vvt might make it a lot more powerfull all over. maybe feel like more than a 30hp differnece because the power would be better at more places in the power band?
Any one with thoughts?

The question is so speculative and relative that it's impossible to answer. The best I can do is to say that it will feel approximately like a 30hp increase.

5 speed or 6 speed trans? I was around 260-270 and 5 speed went out pretty quick, street driving.

Torque is what breaks the rods, torque peaks in the midrange.

Its a 5 speed and I think I will be happy with 230 hp or 210 rwtq. this is prob a newbie question but. If torque is the killer can you use ebc to up the psi in the upper end of the rpm band with out going over the 210rwtq and still get extra power?

Stop being a wiener. Risk it or build the motor. My old miata is pushing 263whp on a stock 97 1.8, 5 speed transmission. Been like that for over 2 years now.

then there's something about clyinder pressures and the rpms and stress and a lot of techincal stuff I like to ignore.

ramping boost gradually will help a bit.
but then why not just buy a rotrex and do the same thing but much simpler

I'm closer to 225 rear wheel torque.

And also I have seen rods out of a car with just a little bit more AND water injection.

none were straight. sadly I nuked my gallery and can't show you what I mean.

I have always been confused on the torque vs hp limit of the engines. I know the torque is what kills the rods, but 250whp is what people have been quoting on here for years. On the older motors, that is also probably about 250wtq, but with VVT and better flowing heads and manifolds, 250wtq could easily be quite a bit higher than 250whp.

I have my boost pretty low for now, but when I go to the dyno (someday) I want to know what to shoot for so I don't blow my ---- up. I am thinking 225wtq is the number to go with, and just take whatever hp that ends up being?

There is no real number. 250 is just something everyone agreed on. Your plan sounds fine.
