Shift Light

Anyone using a shift light for the miata? If so, which one? Keeping my eye on the tachometer while accelerating is not optimal. Thanks

proughj 08-18-2010 03:11 PM

yes, autometer

is there a miata specific, or any will work? I'm experienced hooking up those to cars with a distributor...

Took the guts out of one of these and mounted it inside my gauge hood.

I have a knocklite. I might install it next week. It does shift light too.

I'm running a series of LED's the work off the ECU, very handy for when on track.

Pretty much any modern unit that's designed to sense a tachometer signal will work. On the 1.6 Miatas, the tach signal is produced at the igniter (mounted near the passenger's side shock tower) on a black/white wire, which goes up to the instrument cluster on a yellow/blue wire. It's a 0-12v squarewave.

I have a Datatool Revlight. They're no longer available new, but they do pop up used every now and then. Very easy to install and you can bend them to fit interesting places. This was in my NA, it's now in my NB.

And on the 1.8? I gotta hook my shit up... now. Also need the knock sensor wire color. I saw the manuals in the "useful posts" section here but there's no 01+ :(

Depends on year. '94-'95.5, tach signal comes from both coils (in parallel) on a blk / wht wire. After that, it comes from the ECU, black/white @ 4L through '97, then grn / org @ 2K for '99-00, grn / org @ 3) for '01-'05

That's because the Useful Posts section is only for Useful Posts. :)

Knock on an '01 is a white wire @ 4M, with a shield around it.

BTW, what the fuck is that thing in your avatar? Seriously, it looks like somebody stuck googly eyes on a mutilated hand. It actually kinda creeps me out.

That's his ghetto sawzalled frame rail, for which he has taken no end of abuse.

Hopefully for the led lights, that could help. I lack the electronic knowledge to fully understand whats going on, but I will attempt it. I think it would be cool to drill holes for those in the edge of the gauge bezel right above the steering wheel.

I don't have it yet, but I've been kicking around picking up an Eclipsetech Shift-I for a while. You can adjust a lot of things on it (start/end rpm, how the lights light up, etc.) but it's a little pricey at $170 which is why I don't have one yet.

If you just need a simple 1 light one, you can use an RPM activated switch and wire it to a light. Just be careful shopping around because the MSD ones require interchangeable pills that aren't cheap.

I'm using the Gizzmo carbon fiber shift light. It's nice and compact but still bright enough to see. Really easy to install.
