Some quick 1.6 questions.

I'm wanting to do a miata turbo project car. I'm going to buy my brothers 91 w/ the 1.6 that only has 50k miles on it. He said that the 1.6 is the best to turbo because its really stout. My question is how stout? All I want out of the car is no less than 250whp, but 300whp at the most. Do yall think a forged build is necessary?

Have you ever rode in a turbo miata? With 6psi, from a role on I was running with a 99 GT mustang till 100mph. That is probably 150-160hp with my setup.
300hp is possible, but I would want to build the lower end.
I want to run 250hp myself. But if I only get 220 I'm cool.

The motor is good for 12psi without lowering life, after 12psi you start lowering the life span. The maintrain is good for 250. After that things start to get weak.

Remember the car only weighs 2000 Lbs. The new mustang has around 300hp probably weighs 3500-3900lbs. And it will run pretty hard.

Think what 250 to the ground in a 2000lbs miata will do.
These cars are not the tire ballars of the V8's I've had. But they accelerate hard. And if your spinning, You're Losing Time.

If your wanting a stock GT mustang out of the miata, you can do that with 8-10psi. No where near 250-300hp.

Anyway, how much is in your budget for the build. That will define the build more than anything.

I test drove a mazda speed miata. Pretty fun car, but wasnt all that quick, then again it weighs more than the older miatas. My budget I guess you can say is to the sky, but for this particular project, I'm just going to spend just enough to get me to the 250whp to 300who range. Heck I can probably settle for 220whp-230whp.

The msm I drove sucked too. Spool was slow and it felt like a 15 sec car.

220hp is common and very acheivable. I believe I have close to $2300 or better in mine. And that is with the $700 ecu, spare motor and tranny and all that is listed below. I figured it up once, but forgot.

Flying miata is good but pricey, Begi has a great kit that comes with bandaids, or you can swap the bandaids in and add extra cash for Megasquirt.
To save cost you can always use the ebay intercooler kit.
Or you can do like I did and buy a used kit and bolt it up, or DIY kit. Don't buy a Ebay kit. It is a waste of money.

If you don't mind welding the manifold OFTEN you can get away with the manifold, IC, turbo and downpipe. But make the rest yourself.

I personnally wasn't going to even drop as much coin as I did into mine. But it was over time.

Cheapest way would be get a used greddy kit and rock on. That is what I was waiting for when I came accross a use FM kit. I was happy.

If you get a FMU, msd or bipes, greddy kit, 1.8L injectors you can run 180-190hp cheap.
