Stock Piston Weight?

That's the question. Looking for the mass of a stock 1.8 piston or the mass of a forged piston. Playing with some numbers and need to know the mass. Thanks.

1.8L forged 2618 is just about 300 grams.

What brand piston is that? You get that from somewhere or measure it yourself?

Damn, that reminds me I meant to weigh some parts while I had them out and apart, but forgot. I never did seperate the rod and piston though, but could have given a combined weight. Dont guess even that would have helped though. Id like to see someone doing a rebuild do a full weight list for us Miata guys. Maybe I will do that next time.

Is that with or without the quarters?

Gotta be wiithout. If you're getting forged pistons, get them with the right CR.

Quarters are only needed for stock pistons, man.

While we are on this weight thing, how about stock 99 rods??

patsmx5 01-20-2009 05:10 PM

Sure, the weight of the stock 99' rods would be nice too. Go pull one out of your oil pan and weight it. :)

That's the JE stocking shelf part. If you want the weight with locks and pin, just ask.

The last 1.8 I built, the pistons, wrist pins and rods weighed as follows in grams. It was 95 engine.

#1 = 283.4, 78.8, 573.8

#2 = 286.6, 78.9, 573.3

#3 = 287.6, 78.8, 574.8

#4 = 292.1, 78.9, 573.5

I hope this helps.

Thanks a million!

Sure thing! One thing to note is the difference in weight in the cast pistons, almost 10 grams from the lightest to heaviest. It took a lot of work to remove 10 grams from #4. I believe that got all of them within 1/10 gram of each other.

Forged 2618 pistons with wrist pins and locks are just shy of 380 grams.
