Supertech Pistons + Rings = $370.88 = Good Deal?
Looking around online looks like a company called Speed agency is selling each piston for $76.71 and rings for $16.01. Total cost would be $370.88. That's almost $70 less than most places. Anyone had any experience with them?

I hate it when I do that.

I called these guys, they still have the GB price here:

Supertech is near me in San Jose BTW.
I'm trying to convince the No Limit guys (in NY) to convince Supertech to drop ship em to me. Waiting 2 weeks to ship to NY then back to CA is silly. You may want to tell em the same thing. BTW I want the 83.5mm 8.6:1 pistons. |
I called Supertech and for $20 more I have the privilege of driving over and picking up the pistons directly LOL.
|
Lol, ouch.
I'm not in much of a hurry so it doesn't bother me. |
That's awesome. What's the number for Supertech?
Where are you located JasonC? I'm looking for 84mm 8.6:1 pistons. And the group buy for m-tuned rods is still good. That's less than $700 for new rods and pistons. |
<checks dialed numbers> 408 448 2001
I live about 5 miles from them lol. I thought you could only get 8.6:1 in 83.5 mm. |
check out part number P4-MA84-N4 (from speed agency website)
Info from website: Bore 84.00mm Comp Height 1.201" (30.5mm) Comp Ratio 8.6:1 Dome/Dish Vol -4cc Gram Weight 296g Head CCs 50 Oversized 1mm+ Pin Dia 20mm (.787") Skirt Round Notes Piston For Turbo/Nitrous Applications For use with Piston Ring GNH8400 Vehicle Notes Gasket + Deck Height: 0.060" P4-MA84-CR9 is from belfabs website showing 9.0:1 which is not much of a difference. I figured 1mm over shouldn't make the walls too thin. |
whoo! just in time, im about ready to order new pistons.
should i just order from that dealers GB thread? 1.6 please |
Depends how soon you wanna get your pistons.
You live in 408 so it's convenient for you either way. I live in 415 so it's about 45 mins each way for me. So I'm kinda leaning towards the group buy shipped. Don't think the machine shop even started on my block yet anyway. |
wow...didn't know those prices were still good...may be building a motor sooner than I thought.
|
9.0 vs 8.6 is a pretty significant difference in terms of detonation resistance.
On 91 CA craptane I'd go with 8.6 for a turbo app. Much more forgiving. If we get em from the GB folks in NY we should convince em to get Supertech to drop ship em to us in CA to so it'll take 1-2 days instead of 2 weeks. railz call up Supertech and check if the pistons you want are in stock. If we both show up at the same time with cash in hand they oughtta match the group buy price (which is only $20 lower). |
If you show up in person to pick up the pistons would you have to pay sales tax?
|
I asked on the phone and they kinda said no.
Either that or the +$20 price includes it. They're 5 miles away so it's worth a try for me lol. |
railz if you wanna go to Supertech, call me four six six nine three nine nine.
|
ring ring ;D
wait, your phones off =( |
Just ordered the M-tuned rods and Supertech pistons. $310 and $368.40 shipped. $678.40 for the combo. Some people try to sell their used parts for that price.
It's $10 more to have them drop ship from supertech, but it takes them a few days to ship. He said it's only a few days difference and I'm in no hurry so I'll save the $10 for a double cheese burger n large fries from McDonalds. :giggle: |
BTW, I got the 84mm in 8.6:1
|
Jason and I just returned from picking up our set of pistons from supertech directly. It was just a little extra but worth not going through the headache of shipping and possible errors in the piston size.
There front office displays are sick! |
Anybody know why the part number for 79mm low and high compression pistons is the same?
|
Good to hear you both got the pistons in hand.
Know any place in the bay area that's good at tuning miatas? |
gospeed81: The numbers are similar but not the same.
|
Halcyon, if your willing to drive a little to the south there are some really good tuning shops in hayward
|
Halcyon, Trackspeed Engineering tunes megasquirts.
|
I'll be using a e-manage blue.
I'll be willing to travel a little if they can tune it right. Been looking for one close by but no one in the city seems to dynotune. |
Halcyon if you spent all that money on pistons I'd spend more on an Adaptronic or a MS.
|
If you guys go over to Supertech ask them about the design of the piston face-- where the material is thin and dies (after detonation and piston melting). I talked with some guy there-- he sounded ethnic european.
|
I already have a emb still in it's plastic bag. I was going to use it w my pnp 99 head w/jrsc. But that blew up before I had a chance to install it. I'll probably upgrade to megasquirt when I decide to go turbo. But for now I'm trying to go low budget. My other projects might get jealous if I spend too much at once. Lol.

I guess they drop shipped.
I got the same ones. Anyone have the weights of the stockers handy? |

https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/t37356/#post433338 Which shows P4-MA790-N10 for both (with nearly 2 points of compression ratio difference!). I want to say this number is correct for the lower compression, and that the high compression pistons are just N1 at the end, but can't find anything with a websearch off the bat. I'll have to call. I DID just find some 8.5:1 compression pistons though...just need to check availability. |
holy double postage batman
|
n1 is 10.6:1
n10 is 8.8:1 just off this site i googled: Supertech Pistons - THMotorsports - Lowest Price Parts HKS Exhaust Apexi World Sport Koni Seibon Carbon Fiber ACT Exedy Clutch Skunk2 |
Talked to Adam at nolimitmotorsports...
Supertech DOES have the 8.5:1 78.5mm(1.6L +0.5) in stock. $380 shipped with rings. |
now..I'll be set if I can find a place that sell Supertech valve spring kit for good price.
JasonC SBB: are you going to have Steve Cardelli to build your motor? Looks like we have the same parts according to your post. - Jason |
Cardelli is a good 45 minute drive away for me.
I took my stuff to Victory Machine in SJ which is 10 minutes away. Pricier, popular with the local V8 crowd, but convenient. |
