Default Threw my Miata Rod into outa Space - planning rods only build

Hello guys,

today i threw the rod of the 4th cylinder into outa space. pictures below..

i think about a "ebay rods" only build on a cheap 1.6... planning on swapping my arp studs into the new engine ... new headgasket, ACL rod bearings... leaving everything else as it is... somebody experience with this ? cheap as **** rods only build. how much power can i reliably (or for 20kmile till the engine blows again) get?

Cheers
Daniel

You say 1.6 but I see an NB.....what exactly do you have? Any idea why you broke in the first place?

Ohh and you're asking a question that's been answered a million times, better put on your flame suit.

okay sorry for asking...

i'm from germany. here the NB was available as a 1.6 and 1.8 .... i changed the head gasket 3000 kilometers ago... maybe massive oil consupmtion... thats typical after the HG change, but oil level was alright 20km ago... check directly before i drove off.. was runnign about 10psi on my TD04L. so pretty save ... will take the engine out and have a look what i find inside...

You're new, this forum operates differently than most, read up on the rules and you'll fit in fine here.

To directly answer your questions rods only build will last as long as you let it. If you scattered a motor at only 10 psi on that tiny turbo you need to figure out why or you'll scatter your rods only build too, maybe not the rods first but bearings or pistons. Since you're making us guess I'm going out on a limb and guessing you don't have a standalone ECM and you knocked the rods out of the motor.

Connecting rods are the weakest link in the engine, but by replacing them it does not mean it is not going to blow up again.
What kind of ECU/tune do you have?

the car ran on 102 octance with about 20 degree ignition before redline. i'm using a megasquirt 2. tuned the car myself it ran 25tkm with this exact setup multiple racetrack events and many hours full throttle revlimiter fifth gear autobahn action... so the whole tune and setup ran reliable for about one year, with beating on the engine everyday.

so no "knocking out the rods"

Timing at peak torque is where most guys get into trouble, but 20 degrees on the top end on good gas doesn't sound crazy. Inspection of the Pistons will tell you if it was knock, if they look good then it was probably just it's time and a rod only motor would make sense.

not necessarily geared towards the 1.6, but good enough...

rods are definitely the weak link in the block.
