Which throttle Body

I'm looking to have an intake manifold built and I need to decide this weekend as to which throttle body to use. The requirements are as follows: it needs to be able to flow enough for 500 rwhp without being a restriction and also be able to work with the factory ecu if possible.

It seems that everyone likes to use the mustang throttle body, but I can't help but think that there would be other viable options to use. I've always like to try and use other oem parts if possible because they are cheap but reliable. There's one from an Infinity Q45 that I think might work, but I thought I would post up to see if there are any other ideas are out there.

5.0 TB for the win! the reason for the mustang tb is there cheap a dime a dozen, they range in size from 60mm to 105mm so plenty of choices. they have a simple 3 wire tps for standalones and a idle adjsuting screw. you could look at honda crap but there alot more $$ theres nothing wrong with the 5.0 tb, there are plenty 1000hp mustangs running these tb, more 5.0 then you will find q45's

I didn't think anything on the Q45 was cheap.

When it comes to aftermarket, I think most import guys think of honda, but the ford guys with the 5.0 offer more cheap/quality parts than you can shake a vtec solenoid at.

Why reinvent the wheel?

My vote goes towards either the q45 Tb or one from a DSM. The non turbo throttle bodies are big enough to support 500hp. The turbo throttle bodies are just a smidge smaller and probably harder to find in good condition, although I bet Andre has some laying around or could find one.

If you want to use the stock TPS use the universal 96-03 mustang throttle body from Edelbrock they came in both 70mm and 75mm. BRP/Stage One Tuning makes an adapter kit to use the stock TPS. In fact I've got a spare TPS adapter kit just lying around.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but how easy does the 5.0TB mount to a stock 1.8 manifold?

SeePlusPlus 08-02-2009 11:23 AM

It doesn't, he's making a custom manifold

I know he's making a custom manifold, but I was under the impression others had used it with a stock manifold. Guess not.

Even if it did fit it would probably be pointless. As I remember, the inside diameter of the intake manifold is no larger than the stock TB.

The only time I've heard of people using a Mustang throttle body with the stock IM is when doing the dual throttle body mod for superchargers. I can't recall if it hooks right up though, I highly doubt it.

I wouldn't be doing it for performance gains at all, but to utilize different sensors. I currently have a flyin miata adapter plate mounted on my 1.8 manifold and a 1.6 TB. The adapter plate pushes the throttle body out too far, and my upper radiator hose rests on my tight radius 90 elbow. Now that i'm running standalone, I have been keeping my eye open for a 1.8 TB, but I would rather get something more generic like a 5.0TB that can be found near anywhere, and I could get rid of the stock idle system as well.

Now we're talking. Is their kit a complete solution or does it still require an aftermarket ecu to function correctly. Ideally I would like this to be one thing that I'd like to be able to use with the stock ecu. The less I have to change out at emissions time the better. I couldn't find this on their website, anyone have a link? If not I'll just give them a call on Monday.

I've got a TPS adapter kit in hand I can sell you for $30 shipped.
Here is the kit they sell.

After doing a bit more research I'm going to give the Q45 tb a try.

Just wondering Why?

Well, back to the drawing board. It won't work with the manifold I was looking at, so I guess it's either the Mustang junk or find a different manifold.
