Throwout bearing grease
 

What kind of grease are you guys using for the transmission splines/throwout bearing. Im used to using Honda Urea grease, but is there anything suitable from autozone/advance/napa?

Urea is one of the principal components of urine, a byproduct of the metabolization of amino acids from protein.


That having been said, are you asking about just lubing up the splines on the transmission input shaft, or are you trying to re-pack the throwout bearing itself?

For the former, pretty much any old bearing grease you have lying around will do. It doesn't take much. If you don't have a jar of Redline CV-2 lying around, get some. It's magic pixie dust* for wheel bearings, bicycle cranks, headset bearings, cross-slides, and pretty much anything else not found on a Honda**.

* = Does not actually contain dust, which isn't a good thing to have in bearings. Guaranteed pixie content minimum 42% by weight.

** = Hondas, from what I can tell, must be lubricated with some exotic substance from fell to the earth from space in 1956. Protip: don't try to patch a leaking power steering hose on an '87 CRX with hose clamps and a bicycle tube. It doesn't work.

I'm just lubing the splines. I'll get that pixie dust grease!
Btw, 1985 CRX was my first car. Great car to learn how to work on cars.

Shop manual says: MORI WHITE TA No.2 or Equivalent Organic Molybdenum Grease

I got a tub of Moly grease at the local autoparts store.

I've always used moly bearing grease for everything on all sorts of cars. Never had an issue with anything. One quart size tub should last for many years.

If said grease is not applied, what could happen?

The throwout bearing seizes at an inopportune moment causing you to lose control of the vehicle. You run through an intersection and collide with the presidential motorcade, causing the limo to plummet off a bridge, killing the president. A chain reaction of political events then occurs which culminates with Russian president Vladimir Putin seizing the opportunity to restore his country to the perceived greatness of the Soviet era during a moment of global weakness and confusion. The new USSR forms an alliance with Pakistan, China and North Korea, a massive military buildup leads to war, and within a few years, those of us who have survived are all living under the iron thumb of communism.

Luckily I caught mine before all of the above transpired. My 1991 lost to a slipping clutch early in its life(55K). Evidently the spline had not been lubricated well at the factory. When I pulled it apart, I found that the disc was frozen on the rusted spline just shy of the fully engaged position so that it was ground down at the flywheel interface.

I only thank God that I was nowhere near the Presidential motorcade during that period.

And only asking, as I don't recall greasing of the splines was done while I was assisting BEGi dropping my motor in. Trans feels 'eh'. Clutch engagement is near the floor but I believe that's due to the FM2 clutch. Feels like it could be adjusted. BEGi tech made my clutch hardline 'work' by bending it so that it does. I have a 949 braided line replacement ready to go, just need to do it already. My heavy duty FM TOB squeaks with light clutch pressure. Goes away after vehicle is fully warmed up from 30+ mins of driving. Using amsoil MTG only, and it's considerably much louder than before :dunno: Trans sat for months with no fluid inside but I doubt that would affect anything. /ramble
