Too good to be true? (cheap rods)

I'm in the market for some stronger rods and the price is very tempting.

Yay or nay?

flounder 11-24-2011 11:30 AM

Isn't the 22mm pin size larger than stock?

buffon01 11-24-2011 11:44 AM

Look up a thread by Leatherface24 he got some of those ebay rods... I don't know what he did with them but there was a lot of data in the posts.

flounder 11-24-2011 06:26 PM

I read through leatherfaces thread and ended up buying the crankshaft depot rods instead. I believe these are the same ones he purchased, had the correct small end specs, and were only a dollar more delivered.

Hopefully they will work out for me.

As of right now, the stock 99 pistons. I don't plan on changing displacement but may go with some 94-97 slugs. I believe they will drop compression from 9.5:1 to 9:1? If I can find a cheap set I may go that route?

buffon01 11-27-2011 04:37 PM

Automatics have lower comp ratio

flounder 11-27-2011 04:39 PM

Are the 1.8 MT na's 9.5cr too?

buffon01 11-27-2011 05:26 PM

I believe the 94 motors have 8.8:1. The 95-97 have 9.0:1. Then the 99-00 have 9.5:1. I also recalled reading somewhere that the automatics have lower comp ratio than the manuals. I believe all the comps ratios are manual.

Savington 11-27-2011 10:58 PM

Comp ratio in all 1.8s is the same regardless of transmission. The 1.6 has a lower compression motor for the autos.

buffon01 11-27-2011 11:49 PM

Well that clear things out...

miatauser123 11-28-2011 04:06 PM

I was just reading that the autos had a lower compression ratio, might just be the 1.6 but the 1.8 has seen some compression changes..

1.6 Auto: 9.0:1
1.6 5spd: 9.4:1

1.8 99-00: 9.5:1
1.8 2001+: 10:1

There's a low comppression 94 piston iirc. Wasn't published but its know lore that was lowest compression year.

Rods showed up today. They are CAT's, look very nice, and according to the spec sheet the 4 are all within a gram of each other.

Unfortunately I won't know if they're any good for a while....:x:

I am making 297whp out of a 1.6L right now with ebay rods spinning to 8k RPM. I bought them from a different vendor, they were cheaper than what you have listed there but they were cat power too so my bet is they are the same. I abuse my car too, it's been taken to two hillclimbs now, about 5 track days and a few nights at the drag strip.

Buck65 11-30-2011 07:30 AM

Glad to hear these are a fairly solid rod, I have a set in my build (297/278 FWHP) albeit bought from a European ebay vendor and for considerable more than you guys get them for ($280)

falcon 11-30-2011 07:40 AM

Yeah I think I paid like $160 + $40 for the arp bolt upgrade.

flounder 11-30-2011 09:12 AM

Good to hear they are holding up! I'm shooting for January to have the engine assembled and ready to install.

dgmorr 11-30-2011 09:52 AM

I've got some CAT rods off ebay. The small end size that they had listed was incorrect for some reason. I measured both ends and they are factory spec.

ianferrell 11-30-2011 10:20 AM

Whats the thought on rod bolts? are the ARP 8740s good enough if you're aiming for under 400whp or is it worth it to go to the 2000s?

flounder 11-30-2011 01:18 PM

From what I read, the 2000's are only needed for over 200hp per cylinder.

I think they'll be fine.:D

Echochet 11-30-2011 07:48 PM

That's a deal if they continue to hold up.

So I need 95-97 pistons then?

I've had a 94 motor and a 96 motor and the 94 definatly had lower compression pistons. The 94 top had a dish to it and the 96 bumped up. I think the pre obd2 1.8l was 9.0:1

Somewhere in '95 the pistons went from slightly dished to slightly domed. The domed piston has superseded the dished piston from Mazda, so if you order pistons from Mazda Motorsports, you will get the domed piston.
