turbo heating up

1992 miata turbo charged td04h (link engine management) (400cc)

swapped my 1.6 motor. For some reason the trubo get really hot on idle. is it possible that there is no oil going to the turbo or is it always extremely hot like that. Didnt pay attention to it before.

engine temp seems fine. coolant seems fine. no leaks. sensors good. engine runs good besides an annoying valve tick.

gotta car show on the 30th.. eek!

johnmatt Aug 21, 2010 01:28 PM

Car isnt running excessively lean is it? You also gotta remember it is only inches from the combustion chamber so the air is alittle warm anyways

MongER Aug 21, 2010 01:50 PM

I start the car on idle for about 2 minutes and I swear i can spit on the turbo and see my spit sizzle. It seems extremely hot. the car has not been dyno'd yet. It runs rich. Is the turbo being over boiling temp on idle normal?

MongER Aug 21, 2010 01:53 PM

my 1st guess was oil pump or oil pressure.. air comes out of the oil cap so im assuming pressure is working.. im stummped yet again.

miatamania Aug 21, 2010 01:57 PM

Does the exhaust size start glowing at idle...if not, its probably normal.

Turbos tend to get HOT...like 1000*F +

Edit: woot 4k posts.

MongER Aug 21, 2010 02:00 PM

nothing glows really. How would you be able to tell if oil wasnt flowing right to either the turbo or head?

hustler Aug 21, 2010 02:00 PM

Troll thread. No one is this stupid.

If the wheel still spins, then oil is flowing. Are you really this stupid?

Change your oil.

My answer was going to be something talking about carnage, death, and lots of profanity, but that works too.

miatauser884 Aug 21, 2010 02:11 PM

I hate to be an ass, but I kinda agree with hustler. Turbo won't last long with no oil.

Would you grab your exhaust manifold while your car is idling? The air comes immediately out of the exhaust manifold and into the turbo.

I'll break it down further. The combustion process builds a fire in the combustion chamber. Would you light a container of gas on fire and stick your hand in it. Fuck no, it's hot.

Thank you, this post has provided me some relief while studying for my ABR exam. If my wife would ever come home with my lunch, life would be bliss.

:bigtu:

You gotta top off the exhaust bearing fluid brah.
Its running hot cause its probably low.

MongER Aug 21, 2010 02:39 PM

I have different people telling me 20 things at once at my house. **** *bleep* geeZ.. can i not wonder?

Edit: Actually, it sounds like the flux capacitor, follow this link to figure out how it makes your engine faster.
