Typical oil temps?
Finally mounted my sender and got my gauge hooked up (its been installed since March 08).

My oil is always between 210-220.

Mine sits around the 200 to 210 mark, so you're bang on.

Whats ambient? That sounds a little high but I'm used to 50-60F degree days, and see 160-180 oil temps. And where is your sender? Mines in the drain plug.

This morning was 70*F out and I never saw over 180*F, hung closer to 170*F. I have my sender teed right before my turbo: http://boostedmiata.com/projects/oil_temp_sender.jpg

yep, it won't get any cooler than the water. I see 190* on the street with my 24-row cooler which sucks. I guess I just need to drive it harder.

You don't want the oil temps running too low, optimum I believe is around 220.

Oh good deal, I'd be getting the same if I were at the same speeds/temperature. I'll be moving my sensor to an oil sandwich plate soon, well see if there is a significant change. Weird question for ya though: can you take off your oil filter without draining your oil? Seems like the oil level should be below the filter line.

Word is you want the oil hot enough to remove any water that's condensed on the internals when the engine is cold.
You're not getting hot oil temps at that sender location... you know that right? |
its a better spot than the oil pan plug :P

Because your avoid the actual temps of the oil lubricating your engine?

My thinking was metering at the bottom of the pan would be slightly cooler, but it makes sense that you'll see what the temps are after the oil has gone through the motor. In all seriousness, wont it all be pretty much the same temp?

It just depends on how quickly the oil pump can drain the sump.
