Typical Oil temps you guys see?
I maybe just getting a bit worried over it...
I run 9 psi on my FM GT2560 on a AEM FIC piggyback on my 03 with the 6 speed Big 55mm rad, coolant reroute, and I normally run 5W40 Liqui-moly oil (as i can get it decently cheap) At highway cruise, I am seeing oil temps rising to about 240F and even up to 245 after about 30 minutes on the highway, and not on a very hot day. Normally it stays around there after that but I haven't taken the car on a far enough drive to find out if it'd get past 250 after about 1 hr on the highway. Just want to know, is this normal to see? Perhaps I got too used to seeing a relaxed 210 when i was in N/A form. Has anyone done any scientific testing on the benefits of an oil cooler? Thanks |
My oil sits at 185 degrees during street driving. On long road trips on the highway it will sit at 195. On the track it was consistently at 215-220.
I would be worried about 240* oil temps during normal use. That's not cool (pun intended). I will let wiser people chime in about what they think may be the issue or what to do about it, but you shouldn't be seeing those temps during light use. |
With a small oil cooler I stay around 140-160, even after a 30 minute freeway drive, I'd start looking into your setup, make sure nothing's amiss.

Oil temp will depend on where you take your sample from. My probe is in a filter plate, and I will see oil temp ~30° over coolant at high speed cruise.
A sensor in the sump should see (significantly) lower temps. |

A sensor in the sump should see (significantly) lower temps. that's where i got my sensor, mounted on a sandwich plate. The oil cooler defenitely is something I am looking into |
Good point Ben. Any oil temp number needs a note of where the sensor is placed. Mine is in the pan - the 'by the sump' location you mentioned.

My sensor is in the pan.
Before the oil cooler (not even the stock one) 200* cruise, 240* on 100mph pulls. Now I have a crappy Canton oil cooler that keeps everything at 180* unless I'm on the track...then its 260*. RX7 cooler is going in soon. |

around 180f on any kind of road use.. around 220f max(stable) at the track (20+ minute sessions) but my oil cooler setup is kinda overkill. two big oil coolers.. but hey, it works :D

Where would be the better location to take the readings?
Tap a place in sump for sensor Oil sandwich plate Oil drain plug sensor It might not really matter, but I'm installing my sensor this week and this thread has me re-thinking my placement. |

you don't really care how hot the oil is coming out of the engine, you want to know if the cooler is doing its job and the engine is getting cool oil at the inlet.

Your cooler might be able to bring it down to 250F, but what does that tell you? It might be going in at 300F? If it goes in at 260F you know you're on the edge of OK. |
My cooler is right below the P/S rack...temps when its warm out are around 180-190F crusing at night go down to 160F, being an idiot gets me 200-220F.

My RX7 cooler sat in the garage for about 8-months now...it may be ready to go in the car now. I don't know if any more time on the shelf will make it more efficient. |
Taken at the oil feed port for my turbo, I see around 180*F driving around town. When I get on the highway and run 60-80mph it sits at 210*F.
