01 Block with 95 Head. Doable?

So I’ve got a bottom end from a 01 miata that I’m in the process of building for a turbo car, and I also have a 95 head that I could use on it. Just wondering if anyone has ever done this (a search has turned up VERY little on this) I know it’s uncommon but for my power goals a vvt head isn’t really necessary and it would save me $500-$1000 on the stand-alone and a new head.

Any input on this is much appreciated

It has been done. Will work fine. Just slightly less optimal for boost due to higher compression.

yeah itll work fine, the later heads flow better but you can reach similar power with a little more boost, less RPM headroom

will work though and you wont be the first

I’ll probably be running some 8.8:1 or 9:1 pistons in this block for the boost. Not sure which yet. Just wanted to make sure there wouldn’t be any major obstacles in doing it this way. Thanks for the responses

You will want to run the 94-00 head gasket.

Thanks, that’s what I’ve been reading as well, so appreciate the confirmation.
