Yeah Chris took a different approach with the radiator config than I am. Looking at that pic I'm guessing the radiator is sitting behind the sway bar and has slim fans (or none?). That would make it possible to keep the normal radiator cap position, but it looks like he used a different radiator/cap location anyways.
I've got it figured out to where I can use a radiator intended for a miata (using a 55mm unit currently) with the oem fans attached, slanted at a 45* angle. Still doesn't make it a cheap solution just because I didn't have to buy a radiator or fans - I just spent $135 today on fittings and lines alone for the surge tank, but I think it will work very well. I'll post some pics once everything is finished :)

In anticipation of v-mount for track car (low radiator), I bought this with a 1.5bar cap to use with the bypass... knocks out 2 birds with one stone with pot integrated with tank (expensive enough though).

Are there any gains having the radiator low (like I want) vs placing it high? I figured it's much easier to mount the larger radiator low and leave the begi ic up high vented out the top of the hood.

radiator is a lot heavier than the intercooler (especially when full of water) so it makes sense to mount it in the more rearward and lower position.

Unless you have an intercooler from CXracing, in which case, it weighs about the same as a Koyo filled with coolant.

Lol true. Mine is super heavy, because the end tanks are 1/4" thick. I know because I cut mine up to modify the outlet.

So let's say that you have both a surge tank which doubles as the coolant fill point and therefore needs to be the highest point in the system AND a swirl pot. Most references I can find to swirl pots say that it should be the highest point in the system.

If the swirl pot is the version which is in-line with the upper radiator hose and just has a small port on the top for a line running to one of the inputs on the surge tank, how high should the swirl pot be in relation to the surge tank?

(considering fabricating a swirl pot)

If you can tig, I would just make a swirl pot yourself. I've seen some good FSAE swirl pots fabricated for pretty cheap

That's the idea, but before I break out the tools I need to have a design in my head, and the design is going to depend on it's location, and it's location depends on how it needs to sit relative to the surge tank ;)

Obviously you aren't just going for cheapest possible setup but I'm used to BMW (and MINI) where you have stock remote expansion tanks. You could find one of those used for pretty cheap and they come in all sorts of sizes to fit any part of the bay. No need to buy an expensive all billet-aluminum racing version. If you want a swirl pot that won't help you though

Surge tank is already in place, just trying to figure out how high relative to it the swirl pot should be so I can settle on a design for it.

All the best fab work is done on Greddy's. We like the challenge of working with 1.6s.

Once upon a time it was ;)

Only parts left from Greddy kit are manifold (on the second one), wastegate, and turbo.
