I did a rods only build.
picked up a $100 1994 block, kept oem pistons, new rings, new ebay rods and acl race bearings. $90 to hone, clean and check deck flatness at the machine shop and I was ready to assemble it all. put it all together like a Lego, not checking a single clearance, as I assumed it's all standard, as nothing was worn badly on disassembly. 3000 miles and 18psi later, motor is running strong. |

I appreciate all the input. This WILL be my motor built on the side. My original engine is still in the car and running fine. I have no need to rush this job. No idea why this guy put new rods, pistons and bearings in an engine and not even hone the cylinders. Think I'm going to ponder my options for a few days. $ aren't a huge issue and I have time. Just a little rusty. Haven't done internal work on an engine in almost 50 years. I think I want to do it right.

--Ian Surprisingly enough, given the lack of cleaning elsewhere in the engine, the pistons are definitely new. Even stock pistons should warrant a hone. Surprised by how someone would choose to spend their $. |
With a flashlight, is there a way to see if there is a casting mark underneath the piston. I know JE has put the logo on the underside. Also, look to see how the oil controls holes are drilled if any. That might help you narrow it done to what they are.
