What are the rules when adjusting manual boost controller for first time..?

Hi Chaps, Ladies..

I have a 1993 Mk1 Miata with a disco potato turbo, intercooler, oil cooler, its a standard 1800 engine. Its been tuned to 220 BHP running 95 octane fuel. I have been told that with colder plugs and higher octane fuel it's good for 240 on same map. I am a noobe to tuning and turbo's, I only have a really basic understanding. I would like to add slightly more boost - it has a manual boost controller that I could screw "in" but how much and what will this effect? do I have to adjust anything else..

All advice taken seriously

Many Thanks,

Hal

First piece of serious advice: If you're asking this question, you shouldn't be "turning up" the boost.

Second piece of serious advice: If you still choose to ignore my first piece of serious advice, which I HIGHLY recommend AGAINST ignoring, then screw OUT your MBC by 1/2 of a turn and see how much your boost DROPS. This will tell you by about how much you can screw IN your MBC to get a pound or more of boost.

Third piece of serious advice: The advice labeled "Second piece of serious advice" is the first step to DESTROYING your engine if you aren't following the advice labeled "First piece of serious advice".

I have plugged the megasquirt into my mac to change dwell settings when I built COP's.

You cannot just add more boost. If the car wasn't tuned to 240whp you have no way of knowing if the figures on that higher boost part of the fuel and spark tables is safe at all.

You need a wide band oxygen sensor and a keen ear for detonation to check this. Or take it to the dyno shop and have them turn the boost up, because they have a wide band, a keen ear for detonation, and the tools to change the tune if in fact it is not tuned right.
