This came out with my magnetic drain plug today. Best guess is casting flash off the block. But the engine has 100k on it and like 15+ track days. Kind of weird for it to be dropping off now.

steel?

aidandj 07-10-2016 07:48 PM

Its magnetic.

rleete 07-10-2016 09:13 PM

Block booger.

18psi 07-10-2016 09:15 PM

the extra metal that made it 1.6

it's grown into a 1.8 man now

I had tons of that type of stuff in my block when I built it. I ground it all out though.

aidandj 07-10-2016 09:25 PM

No fracture point. It looks the same on all sides. its kinda weird that it fell of finally.

Glad I had the magnet, though it probably wouldn't fit through the screen.

You should think about investing in some moisturizing cream for those hands. I personally like the Neutrogena "Norwegian fisherman use this shit on the north sea in January, and it keeps them silky smooth" formula.

Hand Cream - Original | NEUTROGENAŽ

It's reasonably priced, not terribly greasy, and works as advertised. Your domestic partner will thank you.

aidandj 07-10-2016 09:44 PM

Or dish gloves. Dish soap does a number on my hands and makes my eczema fire up.

I'm more of an "O'Keeffes Working Hands" guy.

18psi 07-10-2016 09:44 PM

hand cream?

you should introduce him to soap first

Clean hands are overrated. I work on my car like 8 times a day. They get dirty every time.

How do we get a linus smiley up in here.

18psi 07-10-2016 09:50 PM

I'm bringing gloves and hand sanitizer to MRLS :giggle:

stratosteve 07-10-2016 09:59 PM

Only on MT.net, when asking about a random glob of magnetic steel, you get advice about moisturizer.

Could be steel or cast iron, though

aidandj 07-10-2016 10:14 PM

The original message I replied to was "piston". To which I replied magnetic.

Gotcha, missed that question edit.

I replaced my magnetic plug with a plug broached and threaded for a 1/8NPT temp sender. This thread makes me a tiny bit nervous.

Crush it up into bits, add it to some fresh oil, then send it to blackstone and see how they react :)

aidandj 07-10-2016 11:55 PM

I should just send it in complete.

There could have been more of these, i haven't searched through my old oil.

18psi 07-11-2016 12:02 AM

the 1.6 is trying to tell you something

aidandj 07-11-2016 12:04 AM

Weight loss bro.

I've got like 5 more track days this year to make it through. And then another 10 next year probably before I will have the 1.8 ready. This thing is a champ.

But then you don't get to see what blackstone writes when they get a sample that makes no sense. Their notes are usually so friendly and conversational.

aidandj 07-11-2016 12:07 AM

I should throw in some gold flake while i'm at it.

ryansmoneypit 07-11-2016 06:26 AM

I'm telling you, it's cast flashing from the block. I had a couple just like it. They were hanging on by a thread, and wouldn't show much if any evidence of breakaway. Clean it with brake cleaner, rinse it in water, and in a day or two it will be a bright orange rust. Cast rust color.

curly 07-11-2016 09:45 AM

Did you ever take the pan off since you bought it from Martin? Or just the head

Head only

+1 on casting flash. I found this in my old engine a couple years ago:

WTF, why did it make my photo tiny?

Let's try this one:

OK, I don't understand what they've done to the forum.

the [img]yourimagehere[/img] tags no longer work. Its stupid.

You have to use the uploader

Savington 07-11-2016 12:58 PM

lol seriously?

e: still works for me. Just have to put a ? after the file type so the perpetually broken, never-going-to-get-fixed uploader doesn't butcher it.

aidandj 07-11-2016 01:00 PM

Ahh, yes. But then it doesn't rehost. Which I like, backups are good.

Seems like the rehosting is somehow broken.

A true B6 never knows when to die!

Mine has also been a real trucker while I've gotten my VVT swap ready.

curly 07-11-2016 02:43 PM

I can't imagine you've done anything worse than when that engine was in laz. The rally cross was a swamp full of rocks. His friend Andy drove it into a ditch, and we did 2 seasons of track days on it.

aidandj 07-11-2016 02:44 PM

Other than boost, jumping it into a ditch, and like 30k miles.

I somehow doubt that IB's servers are more reliable than Imgur's servers, where all my images are hosted.

aidandj 07-11-2016 08:54 PM

I like redundancy :)

I think its safe to assume its a chunk of block casting.

I'm not going to do anything about it. If this motor goes I'm done for a while. Don't have the time to do a rebuild myself, or the money to pay someone else.

I do. I've lost way too much content over the years to various free image hosts stitching to a paid model. When IB started hosting, that was a good thing.
