Where is all my oil going?
So my turbo miata seems to have a massive oil addiction. Compression has always come back good but I was using like 2 quarts every 700 miles or less. My mechanic lent me his leak-down tester and I got terrible results, however I was wary that I wasn't using it properly so I had him check it as well. He said it was the best engine he's ever tested, less then 5% on all cylinders.
This leads me to my question, where is all my oil going? I have some seals that weep but I don't leak enough to leave puddles on the ground. Intercooler pipes are dry and the turbine outlet is also dry. Am I missing something dumb? The car is all stock now (yearly inspection) and I plan to put some miles on it and see if the consumption is the same without the turbo. The car smokes a lot with the turbo on as well. I think I have a rebuild kit laying around so I might put that on just because. Any help would or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, Patrick |
turbo seals probably dead. Are you running an oil restrictor?
|
did you ever mess with the baffles in the valve cover?

I think I gave my oil restrictor away, I had read that journal bearings shouldn't really need a restrictor and I had intended to rebuild my turbo when I got it. I actually have two of the same center sections and I think I swapped to my non-rebuilt one because of another issue I was having (was unrelated).
I've been rather busy lately but I'll try and tear the turbo apart tomorrow and see what I can see. |
