Wrist pin retainer clip?

Changing my oil today for the trip to Laguna next week. Found this stuck to my magnetic drain plug.

It’s a chunk of wrist pin retainer.

What is going to happen without that? Seems like the wrist pin cant come out because it hits the oil control rings. It’s a 2.0l stroker with new Wiescos.

You need to take it apart and fix it before it does real damage. I have a friend that junked a whole short block with a broken wrist pin clip. If it were stock junk I MIGHT consider driving it if it were my only way to work....with a built motor and expensive parts...there is NO WAY IN HELL I would even start the engine again before I took it apart and inspected it.

Is there really any question to this!?

Not one more rotation of the motor. This would make baby kitties cry.

Needs to come apart.

Might be a fruitless exercise, but better if you can find out why it broke and fix that too.

You need to check all pistons. Hate to say it, but you might find damage in the bore with the broken / missing clip.

Come on, Bob. You know better. Get the motor torn down and get this taken care of before it causes real damage.

damit.

Well I got a stock internaled back up motor I can throw in. If I skip sleeping for the next few nights I might could get it in and running.

Have to think this through.

Without the magnetic plug I probably would have never found this.

The newest gen of Wiscos have thick retainer clips. Total bitch to get in compared to the older ones and even worse to remove them. I would guess the one I took out because I initially put the the piston on backwards I must have damaged it. It's been running over a year now with this build.

Pretty good reason to run a magnetic drain plug.

rleete 03-26-2012 05:54 AM

I can't believe you would even considered running it. If there's one piece in the pan, chances are there are other pieces floating around in there. You wanna destroy your new pistons?

Interesting that wth these Weiseco pistons I put in last year the wrist pins and the circlips came in packages marked "Made in China."

Was this directed at me? What I have and what I can afford are two entirely different things.

Yearly motor rebuilds argh. Just when I thought this one was going to make it for the second season.

Extra vacation day today. Beast motor is out backup motor is in. I won't get a chance to take it apart to inspect till I get back from MRLS after this coming weekend.

Well my car won't be quite the beast it normally is but it is running and not near the loss if it blows up. got a rough tune on it I never realy tuned it with stock displacement. I just took fuel out evenly across the map till it wasnt so unreasonably rich.

Well it was #1 wrist pin. I think I may have been lucky. The wrist pin shifted over and was constrained by the oil control ring so it couldn’t shift over far enough to cause damage at least not yet anyway. Not much bearing area left on the other side to transfer forces with the pin shifted over like this though.

The wrist pin retainers with these pistons suck I think. Hard to put in and easy to bend while your forcing them. I don’t think I would recommend ever reusing them if you take them out.

Now I have to decide whether I just want to fix the problem or how much I want to refresh the build.
