Yet another coolant reroute question
Getting ready to drop the hammer and order the Begi spaccer for the back of the head. Order the Kia neck and coolant hose part XL 1215 (thanks DJP) from Autozone(or however is cheapest/closer). +the freeze plug, I forgot the size. Does the Begi water neck plate also fit over the freeze plug I'm putting in the block. Don't truly trust my freeze plug installation ability.
Question is for the turbo coolant lines. I've searched forever and can't find any pics or others routes. The '99 has the stock oil cooler by the oil filter with coolant lines. If I delete the front water neck is there any reason I can't route the small turbo coolant line from the oil cooler to the turbo IE: Water leaves from back of the head>goes to oil cooler thingy>routes around the block (around the front? or back?)> does NOT go to the throttle body (unless someone can give me a good reason to keep the thing hot)> and goes to the turbo>magic happens> and out to lower hose area It's for the '99 with FM's crossflow radiator fyi. I'll get a proper oil cooler when funds allow. The coolants drained at the moment and now seems like a cood time to do this. If I have to keep the thottle body in line with coolant I'll route it around the front. If not it'll go round back if I can. The EGR pipe has been deleted. And yes I want my heater to still work. A/C is removed, but I hate being cold. Blame the broken bones or growing up in SoCal. |
The block off plate will not fit. Well, it might, but stock is sealed with a o-ring, which the plate doesn't have a groove for. I wonder if a thermostat gasket would work there. I'm not 100% sure it'll bolt up though. The trick for the freeze plug is a 5lb sledge hammer.
The water around the throttle body supposedly helps with idle, especially around warm up. No, there's no reason you can't go from oil cooler to turbo. |
I keep finding the freeze plug size for the 1.6. Does the 30mm freeze plug fit the 1.8 as well? Might make a plate to freeze plug and seal it with a plate. Tired of doing s--t twice when the first try should be the only try.
|
Put a little sealant on the freeze plug, and pound it in place. Smear a little sealant around the seal, let it dry before filling with coolant. This setup lasted me a couple trouble free track days. Make a plate to bolt over for good measure. I just did that today.

I just cut out a piece of steel drilled two holes + RTV and no leaks. Same as a freeze plug i guess but i needed to put my autometer temp sensor there. Some day I'll do a reroute documentation on mine.

freeze plug should be 30mm
i just removed the waterneck from the front. engine builder took the begi block off plate and modified it to fit on the block instead of the waterneck. he used rtv to make the seal, no freeze plug. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1330147416 |
I'm think along the lines of Philly and a freeze plug. Overkill is my middle name. Might be bit drunk now. Ordering the begi stuff in the morning sober. Cards and alchohol don't mix. Thanks for the info.

i used a plug and plate. no problems though iv heard of problems with just a plug.

At the moment I'll add this question here. If no answer I make a new thread.
How does this fitting come out? Is it pressed in or threaded? I searched like crazy and I know it has to be buried somewhere in a thread. Figured I'd ask before I attack it with vise grips. Back of head https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1339720665 This fitting here https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1339720665 |
I believe its pressed, not threaded.
Where are you guys ordering the Kia water necks these days? How much is the BEGi spacer? |
Neck is $23.50
Spacer $93 ---------$116.50 + I have several feet of Vibrant's silicone line for the coolant 1 1/4in I think. Too lazy to go measure. It fits though. With the FM crossflow rad the GM hose gets pushed to far into the fender for my taste. Returned it. Wish I could run the oil cooler like yours Husltly. Yes there are probably cheaper ways, but this so far has been bolt on. Need to delete this fitting though to eliminate the oil cooler/throttle stuff. Really don't want to just cap it and have it fail eventually. |

I put studs in my head for the coolant parts, ---- me. I need to redo mine badly:

I like the studs idea better than these cheap bolts that came with the kit. Was going to get better bolts. Now going for better studs.
|
Have any of you gays ever removed that lower stud? Is it a bitch? Is it going to be a huge bitch to install the BEGi reroute on my car? I'm tired of not liking my reroute. It works okay, but it makes bubbles and I'm worried about the head. Not sure if I should jack with this or not.

Double nuts method should easily get that bottom stud out but will there be a hole there?

If you give me a few days and I remember I'll post the stud size. It's 20+ min to Ace for me so the trip has to be worthwhile. Just 2studs costs me more in fuel.

I just bought the BEGi ----. Who wants to sell me that little plug that goes above the nipple on the back of the head?
|
I have one for eleventytwogallion dollars:giggle:
FM may have a few. I need a VVT banjo bolt. The one that goes on the block for the VVT oil feed line. 10mm. The one from ATP only leaves 2-3 threads of engadgement. Doesn't make my pants tight in the least. |
