Newbie looking for mig welding tips.
 

So I finally bit the bullet and got a Mig. I did not end up with the Eastwood as planned. I got lucky and came across a new Lincoln Power Mig 210 Multi-process. I got it for a steal! It has dual voltage so im not tied to 1 outlet. It has the ability to Tig as well. Its actully got some pretty good reviews for Mig and Tig. It has a lcs screen that walks you threw set up and makes it pretty much goof proof.

I still have never Mig welded so i have been watching lots of youtube videos. If you have any must see videos or articles i should read i really would appreciate it.

Are there any must have tools i should get to help with process? Any recommendations on gloves? I know Hobart makes some tip gel im going to help with splatter at the tip. What size wire do you guys recommend? Is there any particular brands of wire you recommend?

Im hoping to get my gas tomorrow and may get a chance to get some practice next week.

What kind of things are you going to be working on primarily? A good grounding clamp can be really handy for some jobs.
I'm actually pretty satisfied with my harbor freight gloves. Just be sure to get something with long cuffs unless you'll be wearing sleeves.
.030 wire is a little easier to work with in general, but it really depends on what your job calls for.
Get a few scrap pieces of material and practice welding up some butt joints. Experiment with a "pushing" technique and and "pulling" technique.

I learned through watching Jodi on welding tips and tricks videos. I like his incursive e movement. I find the torch speed to be fast when compared to tig. The puddle is more difficult to see because of spatter.

.030 wire is a good start and covers a wide range of thickness. As stated above, it depends on the use. Hobart, miller or lincoln branded wire will do. Tractor supply has a decent supply or your local welding shop.

I dont know what gloves i have. I find they arent as important for mig vs tig. I did pick up a welding jacket due to spatter.

I never tried the torch gel. Let us know how it works. My torch gets gummed up at the tip.

You should get a welding helmet. Looking directly at the weld while in action can cause blindness.


Seriously though. Clean your material. Set the machine to what it says on the panel (usually on the inside). Set up gas flow. Then just practice.
I can tell you arc length, torch angle, travel speed, heat management, ect. But you'll just have to practice and learn for yourself.
