Default Jalopnik: How A $500 Craigslist Car Beat $400K Rally Racers

I got a huge kick out of this.

A guy from Chicago enters the WRC Rally Mexico with a 1991 BMW 318i he bought on Craigslist for $500... and becomes a legend.

"I once asked Bill why he insisted on going through every spectator section crossed up and with the engine banging off the limiter. "Dude," he said, "I don't care if it costs me a couple of tenths. It makes the fans go nuts.""

"Halfway through the first day, Caswell took a jump too fast and broke a motor mount arm on landing. The following night, during the 45-minute service period, he fabricated a new one using scrap steel he happened to have in his trailer."

On TV we typically only see the front runners and the top class. They have a couple different groups and 3 different classes. Absolutely fantastic story about that guy, the race and his participation. Gives us regular humans with rally driving dreams hope.

I think the deal is that they had a class according to Rally America rules. It looks like this guy is a Rally America driver, ergo a good match.

They only showed the JWRC guys for like 30 seconds on the 1 hour show, and that was just because they were up in the standings.

Its the automotive equivalent of the Death Star run. Possibly one of the coolest stories I have seen in motorsport.

Awesome entry! I liked the fact that he had fun the whole time with fans, even playing tunes while wrenching in the pits.

Dust to Glory.

Absolutely stellar documentary about the Baja 1000. Covers everything from the trophy trucks and the factory-sponsored bikes to the small teams to the guys in the stock VW Beetles. One of my favorite pieces of cinema ever.
